Last night I was rubbing Finnigan's neck and noticed a lump on the side of his neck under his jaw. It is under the skin and is maybe the size of a quarter at the most. Finn is only 17 weeks old so I don't know how serious it could be. I'm going to take him to the vet and see what we can find out but I was curious if anyone has an idea what it could be. I was hoping to avoid a trip to the vet because I know how quickly the cost can add up but I worry too much to leave it for a few days and see what happens. Hopefully it will turn out to be nothing.

Does it have a whisker coming out of it? A lot of times dogs have moles in that area (mine does). Do you have a photo?
No, it doesn't have a whisker. He has a bump with a whisker under his chin but this lump is different. It is on the side of his neck just under the jaw bone. The bump isn't raised on the surface of the skin, it is under the skin only. My thought was a swollen lymph node but I don't know enough about it to say. My family has had dogs get tumors and cysts on their chest in the past. One ended up being cancer and the other was not. I hope it's nothing that serious. It almost feels like when you have a sore throat and you can feel the enlarged glands in your neck. It doesn't seem to be bothering him at all.
I hope Finn will be ok! It could just be a cyst. Our Weim has one on his cheek. But it never hurts to check. We're praying for you *HUGS*
We had our visit with the vet. He said it is a swollen lymph node and that the one on the other side of his neck is bigger than usual too but not as big as the one I noticed. He didn't want to run tests just yet. He said as long as he is acting normal we should just watch it for a while. He said if it gets bigger, becomes painful or if other symptoms show up, to come back in for blood work. His first concern would be Puppy Strangles but if that is the case, he will show other symptoms. The vet said in a puppy, cancer isn't usually a concern. It could be an infection but since he isn't running a fever, it would have to be very mild. The vet was very nice and didn't even charge us for the visit. I guess all we can do now is just watch him for changes. I wish I knew how long it has been like that. You have to really be feeling around to notice it so it's possible that it has been there for a while. Finn had his last shots 2 1/2 weeks ago so I would think if it were there at that time the vet would have felt it but I can't be sure.
Oh well, I hope it isn't anything. Maybe he got a swollen lymph node because of the shots? I think I've heard of it, though usually at the site of the shot. But I don't think it is totally impossible that it could cause his immune system to temporarily flair up.

We will continue to pray for Fin.
Thank you. I'll keep you all posted if we find out more. Hopefully it will just go away and not be a problem.
About the same age my Corgi had the same lump, he is now 3 years old and doing wonderful, but we had the lump removed. We took him to the vet and they did a biopsy just to be sure it was not cancerous, the Vet had told us it was very unlikely but they like to biopsy and remove it to be 100% sure. He was put under anes and had the lump removed and was able to come home the same day. He had a few stitches, but his hair grew back quickly in that area a week later the results came back letting us know it was not cancerous. He has never had another one again.
Thank you both for your comments. My last post on the topic was over a year ago and we've had the vet check him out several times since and he said it was just his lymph nodes and they are a normal size. They may have been larger at the time but since they are back to normal size and he has not experienced any problems, it's nothing to worry about. Of course he's a grown boy now and has filled out. These things were much more noticeable when he was a puppy. :)
