Darlene - I would say to just go for it and see how she does. The first time I took Penny to the dog park she was pretty petrified around the other dogs. She was about 10 months old and did not have much experience around other dogs. She growled and showed her 'wolf teeth', as my friend calls them, to any dog that came near her. We just went to the far table and sat for 1/2 an hour. Every dog that came by she growled at. The rest of the time she cowered under the table. Seriously, I'm surprised I went back at all. But... it was important to me for her to do well around other dogs so I persisted. We went back each week and she got better and better. Now, she's a seasoned pro :). It took maybe only 3 or 4 times and she was pretty much fine. Honestly, I found that the more relaxed and trusting I was, the better Penny was. It just takes time and you've got to trust that they know how to communicate with the other dogs and will work things out. If another dog is bothering you, you can always just go to the other side of the park. It's big enough that they don't usually go that far away from their owners.
If you would like to start with fewer dogs, the evenings on weekdays don't usually have many dogs. I go around 5 or 5:30 sometimes and there's maybe 4 or 5 dogs in the park. Sometimes these dogs/ owners are a little kooky, though. I find that these are the times that Penny doesn't really interact with the other dogs, she just likes to chase a ball.
I would love to go Saturday also to the park. Emma is not used to other dogs so I want her to meet others in a small area. I've gone to the park twice this week but I haven't put her into the big one. She looks excited about playing with the others dog but I need a more control area since I don't know how she's going to take being around alot of dogs. Maybe week days early would be good for her to start or meeting with one or two dogs to see how she does. Help!!
