We've been wanting to find someplace where we could take our corgi's so they could get into the water more. I always hear about Corgi's swimming and I've wanted to try and get ours out and see how they would do. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to take them in Omaha. All the lakes around here seem so dirty that I'm not sure I want our pups swimming around in it. Anyone in Omaha have a preferred place? Also, how do you deal with the wet, possibly stinky, dog when it's time to drive home. :)

I'm glad you asked this one, I've also been looking for a place to get my corgi in the water so she can eventually go kayaking with me!
We are looking for a convenient lake as well. I'm not sure if Fremont Lakes restricts dogs on the beach. There are a number of Sand Bottom lakes around Omaha...surely there would be something--mostly private. We tried going to the boat access on the Platte River by Waterloo, but the water is deep right at the ramp. I wonder if Two Rivers SRA would be a possibility? I know there are sandbar areas, but finding the public access is tricky.

Don't forget about the "Doggie Dip"--info below.

Doggie Dip: August 8th AND August 15th
NHS and the City of Omaha Parks Department is partnering to offer you and your best friend two pool parties this summer on Sunday, Aug. 8th and Sunday, Aug 15th.

Doggie Dip #1 @ Lee Valley Pool:
Sunday, August 8th • 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. • Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Lee Valley Pool will be open for human and canine swimming. Big dogs can swim in the main pool while the kiddie pool area will allow big and little guys to "get their paws wet" and see if swimming is for them. The City's Parks and Rec Department will have lifeguards on hand and the whole thing should be really "cool."

Doggie Dip #2 @ Gallagher Pool (Benson)
Sunday, August 15th • 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. • Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
The last night of the summer pool season, Gallagher Pool in Benson (click here for directions) will be open for human and canine swimming. Big dogs can swim in the main pool while the zero depth area will allow the non swimmers a chance to get wet and stay cool while they test out the idea of swimming.

New this year to help the pool filters, dogs must be rinsed and brushed before entering the pool. Admission for each dip is $5 per dog. Take a look at how much fun we had at last year's dip. Watch the Doggie Dip Video!
Yeah, I saw the Doggie Dip events. But with neither of our dogs having gone swimming before, and both a little lacking in the social events department, I didn't think something so big would be a good idea for their first swim attempt.
Good point. You might try Two Rivers SRA by memphis. In the past they have had spots along the river with lots of sand bars for shallow wading...I haven't been there this year so don't know how the river has changed. I'll have to stop when I'm on my way to/from Omaha and check it out. Do you use a kiddie pool for your dogs? We have a couple set up in the yard for when it is hot. Might be a good way to get them used to the water. We even play "diving for weenies"...I cut up bits of hot dog and throw in the pool so the Corgis have to put their heads underwater to snag the snack. They love it and it is fun to watch.
