I am curious to see what everyone else lets their dog chew on. I have not given Chloe any rawhides yet but I think she's old enough now (5 months). I have been leaving her home all day now with good results. I have gated the kitchen area for her and have a radio playing to keep her company. So far no accidents. I would like to give her something safe to chew on that will keep her busy for a few hours. She is really going through the teething stage right now. Any advice is apreciated.

P.S. One of her favs right now is just a plain cow hoof.

Best regards,

Dave, Robin, & Chloe

The chewy's that can be frozen are great. Even a rope pull toy can be wet down and frozen. I guess it makes their gums feel good. Max loves them.
We give Wookie, who is also 5 months old, a really big carrot. He gnaws on it and it's good for him. It is also cold on those gums. I would be cautious when giving them something that might get a piece chewed off and lodged in their throats, like rawhides and hooves, when your pup is alone. Supervised chews are a must. There are fun recordable toys out there that you can put your voice on. Wookie loves those toys that make noise. A Kong stuffed with peanut butter or squeeze cheese will keep the pup busy for a while. In my animal behavior classes, they suggested the Nylabone. Good Luck!
What about a kong stuffed w/something frozen?
Mine love the cow hooves and its great for keeping tartar build up down. Excellent source for keeping teeth clean and cheap. They last longer then anything else. I also like the rawhides for optimum mastication and building forehead muscle. Most of chew toys are aimed towards dental care and very little calories to not cause obesity issues. I like things that keep them busy but has a dental benefit.
I just have to ask...forehead muscle?? LOL. I'm not making fun, I really am curious...
I have a question too - my puppy doesn't like traditional chew toys!! Is something wrong with her? She's never shown the slightest interest in the dog toys I've bought for her. She likes sticks, leaves, and the occasional flower. Surely she must have been teething this whole time (I got her at 8 wks and she's now 4 and a half months), but she just doesn't want what I've tried.
For optimum dental health you need mastication (chewing) which helps w/muscle, bone, and ligament development and the prevention of dental disease. When they chomp down to chew and have to use vigorous pressure and gnawing that will develop stronger muscles and ligaments, not to mention a cleaner dentition. I love to give cow hooves and rawhides under supervision...this gives maximum vigorous chewing to develop all this w/o adding unwanted calories, its not a soft substance to add to build up of calculus, it will help remove tartar, and entertains so their is no boredom. Cow hooves are an excellent investment for they are cheap, last a long time, and are one of the best things for removing tartar buildup. I love them and so do my pups.
I recommend antler chews. See thread.
Pieces don't break off, so I feel comfortable with Caden having it unsupervised. He's been chewing the same chew (size small) for well over a month. We give him ligament chews as well, but definitely requires supervision. He loves them so much, he hides it, to save for later. It's cute watching him go around the apt trying to find a new hiding place. I have to go retrieve it, cause it is a bit gross if he's been chewing on it. They are a bit smelly (not as smelly as bully sticks) and when he gets to the end, I keep an eye on him to see if he has swallowed it ok or if I should take it away, if it's too much to swallow... but that's just me being a worried puppy mama. ~Cindy
