Hello, my name is Rachel. I'm new to this forum; I hope you don't mind me posting a question.

As of recent, my family has been interested in purchasing a small dog, and we've been considering a corgi. As we've never owned a corgi prior to now, I was curious as to the temperament of a corgi, as well as the best place to get a corgi from without having to spend an extreme amount of money. We live in Oregon, but we are more than willing to travel to get the right dog.

We want a dog that is family friendly, as well as playful. Any help is appreciated!

Hi Rachel,
Welcome! We have a 1 year old Corgi named Nellie and I can tell you she is a bundle of energy - in a good way! She loves to go for walks, play in the yard chasing small balls and pushing a "herding" ball around, and she initiates play in the house with her toys. She is a great companion in that she loves being with my husband and me and follows us around the house. She is great with my younger nieces and nephews and we love having them over to wear her out . . . . .she loves to chase them!
A couple of things personality wise . . . . . Nellie is very strong willed and will be the leader of the pack if you let her! We took her to a trainer (as much for us as for her) and she did beautifully. I would say though that consistency is key as any "chink" in the armor is a signal for her to think she can take over! Really, after a year of having her with us, the only issue we continue to deal with is constant chewing . . . . . carpets, furniture, etc. We have come a long way in dealing with this and I think we almost have it under control, but it was an effort!
As far as where to get one . . . . . .well you are in luck as I would say that several of us in this group purchased our Corgis from Sue Desjardins - Applejack Corgis and she is part of our group as well. Beautiful pups! I highly recommend her.
Also, please feel free to come to our next meet up . . . . that way you can see for yourself how great these little guys really are! We'll probably meet again sometime in Sept . . . .keep checking in for the date/time.

Good Luck!
Kim, Bryan, and Nellie
Thank you! You've really given us some great information, and I think a corgi is the dog for us. And we will definitely consider joining everyone for the meetups!

To get a good Corgi you will have to spend upwards of $400. Never buy from a petstore because though the puppies may be cheap, they often have extreme health problems. Before you purchase a puppy you will also want to have money set aside for the spaying/neutering and the shots, toys, crate, wellness checkup, and food. Usually you are looking at around $1000 to purchase your puppy, your supplies, and the first months healthcare. If you are looking for a cheaper route, I would look at the corgi rescues where most dogs are fixed and fully vetted and usually under $300.
