About Me:
I'm a dog enthusiast! I've been in love with dogs since I first watched Lady and the Tramp as a tyke. My mother finally caved in and let me get my first dog, Josephine, a loveable cocker spaniel, my freshman year of high school. Soon thereafter we added Napoleon, a zany cocker-lab mix to the family. My parents also recently adopted a beagle-? mix, Bella, who's adorable!!!

As your typical dog-lover, I light up whenever I see one, coo, and rush up to ask the owner if I can pet it. I stop on my runs to chat with fellow dog owners and make sure Skittles and I take walks next to yards with nice dogs.

I'm also a medical student, yoga student, Chi Omega, Teach For America alumna, former teacher, and former runner/Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser.

About My Corgi(s):
Skittles is a former show dog! I adopted her in 2007 as an adult from a nice breeder in Oklahoma. Feel free to contact me if you're thinking about adopting your corgi!

She's a truly skiddish dog (skiddish...Skittles...get it?) but she warms up to people once she realizes that they're not going to drop something and will in fact scratch her neck.

She LOVES to run, and when we visit my parents, she loves to pick fights with Napoleon. She just started warming up to Bella by allowing the little pup to do its puppy play--aka biting.

What a loveable nut!

Hi Melissa! I totally know what you mean about running up to other peoples dogs and petting them! The other day I saw a corgi at Home Depot and before I knew it i yelled "Corgi!" The girl just laughed and I got to meet her awesome pup. My first dog was also a cocker spaniel too.

Target has some great halloween costumes.
  • Cindi

Welcome Melissa and Skittles! He's a beautiful girl.
  • Brian

    A corgi as a bee...interesting!
  • Kristin

that's cool! when were you at unt? what was your major? what marathon did you run up here?
  • Kristin

awesome! I looked into doing team in training a while ago, but since I was concentrating on school I didn't have time. I used to run cc/track in high school. We are getting used to Nashville, it's quite a change from the big city of Dallas.
  • Brian

Yes, he does have big EARS!! Thanks!
  • Ivy & Bryson

Hi Melissa and Skittles! Wow, I see that we have the common thread that we both adopted our corgis as retired show dogs! And they seem to both share the skiddish thing (Bryson was afraid of EVERYTHING when we first got him, but he's fairly desensitized now). Might be that they don't get to go out and play and socialize too much when they were "professionals". :P

And if you're referring to his very short front middle nails, he actually grinds them that way himself when he walks! We were actually very worried at first, thinking that he may have some problem with his gait. But the vet said he doesn't have a medical problem, just the way he slightly drags his paw when he walks. :)

Thanks for stopping by our blog!

Thanks for the comment, Melissa! When we first adopted Griff, we actually thought he WAS a Corgi/Sheltie mix...but that was before I realized that there were undocked and Fluffy Corgis in the world!

After getting to know my little stinker for these past 1.5 years, I have come to discover that he is 100% Corgi! I'm a total sucker for this breed :)
  • Tracie & Emmy

I bet skittles would have a blast with a soccer sized ball. Emmy likes to rip actual soccer balls... but yes, I bet she will herd the ball around better than we could. :-)
  • Carlie

Skittles is adorable! I'd love to hear how you heard about adopting a retired show dog, my husband and I were thinking about getting another one for Kiwi to have a playmate. Thanks for the comment!
  • Alfredo

Thank you. You have some great looking dogs yourself.
  • Sam Tsang

Hi Melissa, thank you for your kind words, I'm quite a humble guy and won't call myself an "expert" yet :) I've only had Mocha and Vienna for 6 years, so I still consider myself a "newbie" :)

When my wife and I began our quest for corgis in 2001, we spent our weekends at Barnes & Noble reading all the corgi books and magazine, but we thought they were too "vanilla" (generic),
so we focused on gathering info from real people, meeting them, attending meetings and get the sources straight from people with real experience.

So in September 07, we launched this site, I specifically invited experts from all over the country to join us, vets, vet tech, rescuer, trainers...etc. I wanted to provide a place where experts can pass on their knowledge to the next generation of corgi owners.

The Chinese respect their elders very much because they are like "walking encyclopedia", the more time you spent with them, the more knowledge you'll be able to soak up.

Here are a few members that I respect and seek counsel from:
Sam Bates have years of experience under her belt, she is very active in rescue, obedience, agility and herding.

Linda Moore have 30 years of experience under her belt, she does rescue and have a great knowledge of nutrition and vaccines. a majority of our member in the in the STL area got their corgis through her.

Cindi is a dog trainer for PetSmart, her partner Corgimom is a vet assistant. they have a lot of experience in pet therapy in hospice and nursing homes.

Deb Shindle has 20 years of experience, she's a breeder and hold various position for corgis clubs in the state.

As far as training goes, I like Cesar Millan and the NILF principal.
  • Carlie

Thanks so much for your advice...I think we might be crazy to be thinking of getting another one so soon, but we will definitely start applying to rescues. Also, Skittles is a MUCH better name than Stella. Thanks again!
  • Mandi

Roxy is absurdly cuddly for a corgi... she would totally let you smush your face into her.
  • Kristin

hey! I became a member of team in training and I signed up to do the Nike Women's Marathon in October! I'm really excited to get started!
  • Mick . irl

  • Vladimir

Thank you so much for the nice compliment :-) Your corgi is very beautiful, I love her regal white ruff around her neck.
  • Kristin

    Hallo Melissa,

In Holland it is forbidden to cut of the tail, so every corgy here has a "waggety" tail !!
  • Kristin

Hey Melissa! I was wondering if you ever got the message I sent bc now my outbox says it never got sent. Just wondering if there was a glitch or something.
  • Sam Tsang

Hey Melissa, a new member name Erin just joined us and she is adopting an adult corgi, do you think you can help answer her question with transition?
  • Lisa P from WV

Now what did your comment say about a furbuster or fruminator!?!?!? So, it works well???!!!!! and where did you purchase it!!!!!!!!!!!!!???!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Daisy to death but the hair is killing us!!!!! My husband bought her for my birthday in December because I always wanted one but he is allergic to dogs (and cats). We already have one mix but she takes the cake for shedding (even though the pet store lady told him they hardly shed) lol lol lol!!! I'm ready to jump in my car and purchase this gadget!!! Hi Melissa. I just stumbled across your page, and saw that you adopted your Corgi as an adult. I jut posted on the discussion board about the possibility of adopting from a family I just heard about through a friend yesterday. I would love to get your feedback on the matter (the title is "Good time to adopt?".
  • Fozzie Bear

    Heyyy Melissa. = D

Skittles is just the bees knees! I love sables... and she looks so huggable. And her name is awesome, too. You two make an adorable couple.

I always wonder if he has some Husky in him... he has some Husky traits (ie, stubborn as HECK), and he looked like a midget Husky as a puppy. But his fur is so short... shorter than a Corgi's! I wanted to send in for one of those mutt DNA tests, but I've heard they're insanely inaccurate. I call him a Corgi x Husky, though, because it makes the most sense. But who knows!
  • Nicole

Awwww Skittles is quite cute... how are the corgi and beagle getting along? I'm sure they are the best of friends :)
  • Kristin

I'm up to 7 miles with TNT! I love it!
  • Kristin

What kind of interval training did you follow? I'm looking to have a better recovery time.

  • Norma

Hi, Maizy and I joined yesterday, we are in Dickinson and wanted to say hello to our fellow Texans! Skittles is too precious! What a little beauty :0] Maizy, has that same skittish streak too.

I hope that we can someday have a Corgi meet up!
  • Norma

Wow REALLY? Where is it going to be and what time?! =o] If it's not too far, I'd love to come. What do we do? (well besides bring the babies)
Thank you so much for telling me!

    norma
  • Norma

Cool, let me google the location. I'll get back with you asap. What time do you think you and Skittles will be there?
  • Norma

Hey! So how did it go? John, Maizy and I couldn't make it. John had a horrible cold, and was just a big ole baby about it! (rolleyes)... lol. We didn't get to do anything this weekend!

I hope the meet went well! How did Skittles like all her new Corgi friends?
  • Kelly

    Oh awesome, thanks!
  • Norma

Oh how funny! Well at least Skittles has a good time! (lol) Did you take pictures?!
