I'm an over-the-hill mountain climber. I take the dogs on long hard hikes and backpacking trips in Washington's Cascade mountains (West Pembrokeshire), including peaks above 8000', but mostly we maraud about the neighborhood, striking terror into the hearts of evildoers, amusing children, and playing soccer. Mostly, they're couch potatoes.
We lost Sirius, our first corgi, after 7 years, a choking accident.
Check out our song! See below.
Trying to be the person my dogs think I am.
Welsh Corgi Breeder?
No
About My Corgi(s):
Gwynnie is the best dog in the world. Al is even better.
Al is Gwynnie's nephew, from Haley pwc of Bellevue WA (Carrie Hale). Wonderful temperaments, quiet, playful, strong, great with kids, no health problems so far. Their poop don't even stink (YMMV), although Al is, technically, an SOB.
Al would be a good obedience dog; he's always watching you to see if he's doing OK. Independent-minded Gwynnie would flunk (our fault, not hers). Al is an unabashed love-sponge extrovert who'll fall asleep in your arms.
They greet me at the door like I'm some kind of god. It's bad for my ego problem.
Vacuuming is a contact sport, akin to hockey but more violent. They LOVE herding their soccer ball on the paved playfield. Al kicks it hard with the tip of his snout (OUCH?), has poked the ball airborne 8 times in a row, and can aim it unerringly back to me. Their ball-control is done by the committee method, so they seldom score. They never tire of this. Al is an incorrigible ball-hog: I feed Gwynnie softball passes, but Al gets them anyway. This is a great way to exercise a corgi.
A soccer ball turns Al into an ANIMAL.
Pneumatic Sphere Consultants' Technical Report:
Best: 7-8" dia. Nike Jr. child's basketball, toothproof.
Excellent: soccer ball, fastest, carry farthest, durable. Padded balls invite teeth, but is soon removed.
Very good: a volleyball (light, lively, toothproof).
Good alternate: a water polo ball.
Yard sales or secondhand stores, $1-2.
When children fawn excessively over them ("Ew! They're so KEWT! Are they FRIENDLY? Can I PET them?") I introduce them as "Killer" and "Fang".
Hiking:
You can't outwalk a fit corgi*. The Pembroke Welsh marmots can hike all day, 20+ miles with much elevation gain, and the only terrain they can't handle is coarse boulder fields and deep snow. The only time I have to wait for them is above timberline in hot sun; when they start seeking shade, I feed them scraped snow or make a pupsicle out of them (see photos, and the Chillybuddy cooling vest). They're amazingly sure-footed and can handle steep, rugged and brushy terrain; I no longer worry about them falling on rock. I do worry about dog-induced rockfall. They don't bother wildlife, and are so quiet they scare me -- hiking in my blind spot, I often look about and call for my missing dog in growing panic, only to find it at my heels. We've spent nights as high as 9,000' in good weather.
I learned how to sleep with Al entirely inside my wet mummy bag. 1 corgi counts for 3 on a Three-Dog Night, like an electric blanket.
I carry a chest harness and stout leash for safety belay mostly on scary river log crossings; be careful [see my post], a corgi can slip neatly out of a chest harness in a vertical hang!
I've tried to post some useful hiking tips. Their coats resist weather, dirt, and insects.
Peace is a corgi snoring softly in your ear at night. Uh, SOFTLY, Gwynnie, softly...
*UPDATE 9/12/12 Al lamed-up on day 6 of a backpacking trip, so I carried him out in an improvised sling. Cause unknown, likely a knee problem, but don't know for sure and don't know if it's totally healed. He seems fine in the city, X-ray inconclusive. Guardedly optimistic 4/10/13, he seems fine.
Hey no problem!! Thanks for the great laugh! I stole it and put it on my facebook page. Yes, the black is turning to tan on his shoulders and haunches. He's growing up!
Hey! So I found out the color status of the litter! Of the 8, 2 are confirmed fluffies -- both fluffies are red heads -- and 2 are (likely) black head tris!!!! I was promised the male fluffy. Alas, no BHT for me. But at least I can admire them up close and in person!
Also, wow. When does genetics work out so nicely? 25% fluffies, 25% BHTs!
Yep,Our 2 are cousins from Winterflower.Merlin is one of Opal's pups with Siskiyou's Silent night X,and Keris is one of Ace's daughters with Mazda from Timberside.I guess you're right!!They're all related somewhere.
Hahaha it looks good! I was out of the country and just got back otherwise I would have sent one for some photoshop work. I'm no good with photoshop myself. I wouldn't even know how to switch eye colors. Honestly, I don't even know that I have the program on my computer. I hope you had an eventful April Fools. :)
Thanks for the comment! :) Why yes, Laika is named after the astronaut! Its so sad that she died in space :( but I thought I'd honor her, since she was the first living being to go into space. Orion's name was actually almost Sirius when I got him, but I settled on Orion, so when I got Laika I figured her name would be fitting
Yes, it's very sad about Laika's mission having no plan for re-entry. The scientist in my understands that sometimes sacrifice of animals is the only way for scientific advancement but I don't think satisfying our curiosity of space is a justifiable scientific advancement. My sister recently fought of lymphoma though, which makes me more open to the idea of animal testing for medical advancement.
I've heard there's actually a couple of statues of Laika around Russia and she's honored in a few museums. I believe Belka and Strelka were the first two dogs to safely go into space and come back down. Strelka I think even had puppies after her mission (I almost named Laika Strelka) and there recently was a Russian animated kids film about Belka and Strelka. I'll have to watch it sometimes with my little nephew, haha
I remember was i was 16 I was watching a dog show an a welsh corgi came on and i was sold and 7 years, 8 books later I went to one of cpwcc dog shows and i was talking to Jan...I forgot her last name and i look to my lift and Chief walked in and 2 weeks later i got him I thank God everyday for him :) and that's awesome that you won you take awesome pictures! I cant wait until I go hiking with my pup
status of the Keepsake/Haley corgis. turns out there are 3 hidden black heads in the litter of 8 and 2 fluffies. ... mine is looking like he will be a BHT!

Thanks for the email and the questions which we are pleased to answer.
The pups all held their tails up when excited even our Angel. Mostly when Angel is in the ring the tail is held in show mode low - she just does it. Michael sometimes hold his up at show but even he mostly holds them low.
One couple who had the first pup we sold say that they didn't know what to expect when they got him home but as he grew and grew to play with their older corgi they noticed the lead that the tail had.
One comment Dorothy made was that you can see Pandy when he plays in the shrubbery by where his tail is by the white tip on the end of it.
We was living in Ireland when we had our two litters and could legally have docked the tails ourselves (I did the dew claws) but we cannot show them here.
The problem here is that most of the old breeders have either stopped breeding Pems because of the tail ban or just got old. There are so few being bred here although we were contacted by a farmer here in Pembs last night who has just had a litter of five. I just might sneek out and see them.
Yes John, you are right, 100% pure breed Pems with Tails. I was going to have my Vet crop their tail until the vet asst said, "just use a whiteout fluid to mark where you want the tail docked at." : O ??????? OMG! I thought to myself!
I am not ignorant, I know the old fashion way was done with ties to the tail..but since I do not know the proper healthy way to do it, definently not the vet's way...yikes! I check the internet, talk about inhumane goodness gracious. Since I read that there is only a small window of 3 days to have those tails done...I couldn't find someone to do the tails properly I figured, I have no plans to 'Show them', put them out to work with a herd but just love them..they are keeping their tails. So far those tails tons of expression of love and happiness. Best yet, the tails entertain them...they chase their own tail all the time.
Your dogs are beautiful, you have amazing pics. Can't believe how will they do with camping, what does your corgis do when you have the vacuum going?
Corgis are so beautiful with snow, it's like they love snow, mine plays so hard in the snow I can't get them back in the house. I got 4 more Crogis, 1 Cardigan and 3 more Pems, yes that makes 7 and I know..I am crazy.
Hey john hows seattle this time of year we took ruger on his first hike and he loved it he also loves the mudd i looked up some hiking spots in our area and found some ones that look amazing and cant wait to check them out with ruger you were right mi has alot of pretty places (like lake mi a mile away and some of the hiking trails) i do miss wa but its all good how have you been doing any hiking yet your self we cant wait for it to warm up so we can do more hiking and check out those trails there suppose to be really good ones and also take ruger to lake michigan beach he loves water well thanks for the advise
Hello John! Thanks for the lovely comment! I think they are pretty fantastic, even when pushing me to the extreme limit of tolerance :) Can you believe they were both unwanted dogs????? As for the tail, I LOVE it. I wish more corgis got to keep their tails. I rarely see see other BHT either and he has a full black head, not even the white strip. I think he knows this and feels superior to other dogs in general ;) He acts that way anyways!
I love looking at your pictures. I hope to one day move to a place where I have access to such beautiful surroundings!
Hey John! Thanks for all the comments on Ashton's adventures. Ashton's breeder is a wonderful woman named Gloria Danielsen in Woodinville. Her contact info is on the Cascade PWC Club's website. We are on her list to get a little girl when she has her next litter. The last litter she had was Ashton's which was over two years ago. They are going to be tri colors like Al and Gwynn and I can't wait!! :D
Haha. Rafa Nadal is pretty amazing. A great athlete with an amazing work ethic and something very rare today in a world class athlete, humility. He's been brought up so well by his family and is a rarity. He's also pretty easy on the eye ;) Jack even allows me to keep a photo of Rafa (not the dog) on the refrigerator. I'm so surprised that no one seems to know his name. He's been the #1 tennis player in the world for quite a while. The only one that could knock Federer out of the spot. He's won all 4 slams and a gold medal at the Olympics. And he's only 24! His name is pronounced like HaHa...RaFa. Nothing terrorist at all about him. However, my little Ricky/Rafa clearly didn't follow in Nadal's footsteps, as I had hoped! But, RR is still a puppy. I have faith in him. So what did you hear about Rafa Nadal? I guess his win at Barcelona.
Somehow, John, I imagine you like my Jack, who can't sit still for a minute. He's always moving. Otherwise, I might suggest you watch Rafa Nadal now that the clay court season is starting. He's brought a new game to tennis. Clay used to be the most boring of surfaces. No longer. I just suspect he will not have a long career because he plays such a physical game and throws himself into every point. He's not balletic like Federer. OK OK enuf on RN. Now onto RR, who is back to his wild wild ways. : (
She's not from the same kennel -- she's actually from Samhain Cardigans. Awesome folks, fantastic about health clearances, and wow, let me tell you, nothing phases her. ;)
Aw, well, hahaha, I've met some Pems I could have sworn were Cardis and some Cardis that wow, look like Pems, yikes. ;) Don't feel bad at all!
Hi John :) No special saddle, Bevy just knows how to sit in one. Just like how we can get 4 Corgis on one small 4-wheeler. Their balance is AMAZING!!! We have lots of trees here, we live in the Bull Mountains and there are pine trees all over the place. However, I keep a toddler swimming pool out for them because all 3 black headed tris spend time in it because they get hot. When they aren't working they "shade up" on the cool grass under bushes and trees in the yard. Last few days have been in the 80's and neither the dogs nor their PEOPLE are used to it!!! The humidity is almost unbearable since we have relatively low humidity but with the rains and flooding it's not fun. When they are working, they will find the closest pond and cool off...tomorrow we get to gather and move cows back home. The doggies will be pretty tired when we are done. It will be a busy weekend of working cows so will try to take lots of pics/videos of them working.
John i live vicariously through some people and your one of them (i wish i were your dog,) the mountains are my absolute favorite and ive only seen them from a car, and standing on pikes peek looking out .My trip to colorado springs 12yrs ago seems like a dream now.. thanks for the pics...
oh how cool! I am so jealous you got to meet Rain! and play with PUPPIES! another all tricolor litter? So glad to hear that Rain is a real ham. Pudge is slowly becoming a ham as he transmorgraphies out of puppyspazzdom. I should've requested a picture of Rain! Puppy pictures are hard, but at least you got some times to get puppy therapy. Any fluffs in the litter?
So those two are bigger than Al? Yikes. Pudge had his weigh in today -- 4 months, 18 pounds. Molly estimated 35 knowing that the Haley corgis are monster sized -- but I'm having doubts he'll fluff up that much.
Hi John, good to hear from you. I get goosebumps just thinking about being in the same place with all those corgis!!! A corgi lovers paradise :))) Riley is a pretty big boy...his vet told us he should weigh 38-40 lbs, right now he is maintaining 40, but we are going for 38lbs. This guy loves food (not too picky as to what kind). You should see Riley sit in our yard and eat wild strawberries, very cute. Riley and Maggie are on Primal Raw Dog Food...Riley is on diet % and Maggie is on puppy %. I think Riley will gradually lose more.
Don't like the idea of incestuous breeding. In the dog world there is alot of that! Kelly has new blood in her kennel, she has new pups from different breeders. Rosie is retired, Freedom and Kendra are in Italy. Hunter went to Russia in exchange for a Russian female. Riley's Mom Folly has a new owner. Quite a few changes. I'm glad to see all of this happening.
Just looked at Pudge's pedigree. Pudge's grandparents are Vinnie and Sianna. Is Dante's registered name D'Artagnan? Because if so that is Pudge's great great grandpa. Oh man these puppy pedigrees are hard!
yes we have ticks over here and I do believe they are the dog ticks. More brown than red and probably about the size of the end of a pencil eraser. This year has been horrible for them! We can't keep our dogs out of them and we live in town. We are constantly checking them. So far max has had three latched on and zoey only one but they have carried a lot more than that in the house. The collars we haven't been able to use with the puppy and the cat but we have been using a once weekly shampoo that's helped a ton and just recently got a spray that you comb into their fur. We used it before we went hiking and luckily no one came back with any. The vet told me to wait on the drops for zoey but he said frontline and safeguard are the best he found and lasts for a month.
The infrared image would depend on whether you wanted to make an infrared photograph or an infrared measurement. For a photograph, some digital cameras can be modified to become sensitive the infrared spectrum but that messes 'em up for regular photography.
To make an infrared measurement as I did of dear old Watson, you'll need an infrared measurement camera. The one I used was made by FLIR and cost a fair amount. The other problem is that Gwynnie' s snazzy foil helmet or Al's vest is a low emissivity surface so is all but impossible to measure as it merely reflects the heat sources around it. Spot measurements of the surface can be made using the application of a high emissivity tape or paint to a small area but the surrounding conditions would have to be carefully controlled and the timing of the image would be critical. Measuring the foil surface would be better done with some strategically placed thermocouple elements for direct measurement.
Since Corgis are brilliant, I'm sure Gwynnie and Al know all this but are holding out on their knowledge in hopes of at least getting a biscuit from you for it. Every time I sit here at the computer scratching my head about some problem Gromit just smiles and I know he knows more than he's letting on.
John, I'm certain the dogs lose some heat through their pads normally but one of the laws of thermodynamics is that heat flows to cold, so if the air temp or surface is warmer than the paw pads, then the pads could transfer heat to the body which is what happens here if I walk Gromit on a hot sidewalk (which I don't).
In the situation Al and Gwynnie are in, the ground is still cool or cold so they would be losing heat through the pads, which is good. Air flow becomes a factor also, which is why some airflow under their tinfoil hats and vests is important. It would be an interesting project to wire them up with thermocouples and analyze the functioning of their protective gear with a thermocamera. Sadly, those days are behind me and the company wouldn't let me keep the $50k IR camera when I retired.
John, the corgis don't need protection from the alien mind probes, the canine Welsh mind is much too stubborn to be affected. However, the sun is merciless so your efforts to protect your corgi pals is time and money well spent.
Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you. We got her from a breeder in moses lake. Unfortunately with Zoey's litter the female completely ruptured her uterus and wont be able to have anymore pups, which is too bad because these people were just amazing! All the pups and their dogs were in great shape. They started them early with house training and eating dry food. Are you looking for another one?
Hello there! Yea I do think Pippa might be a sable and not an actual tricolor, she used to be a lot darker when i first saw her...it's just the seller wrote tricolor on her health booklet so I assumed she was going to stay that way. By the way, your corgis are beautifull! And all those places you take them to are absolutely breathtaking!
We do have a tri colored corgi hiking friend who has done the likes of dickerman and perry creek. I don't think, however, they have actually done a backpacking trip yet (i think one is in the works) only day hikes. Hmmm, somebody else to search for in them thar hills.
Love your suggestions. Keep them coming. I think I'll be ready to do these kind of hikes next year. I am up to doing about 10 - 11 miles comfortably now. Also taking navigation classes at REI so I don't get lost. Maybe in two years, I'll have enough knowledge and gear to go backpacking.
Well to be fair, I think Leggy is a pemmie with a tail. And I think he is best described as a sable. But, since he came from a shelter, I have no background information. He was picked up as a stray. What I can say is that his personality is CORGI! He can be a bit of a menace because everything bigger than him is an opportunity to test out his herding skills (except for his parents). & He has a mischievous streak that is concealed behind those massive puppy eyes. I love this dog!! :)
Birthday? I saw a huge light on the horizon after dark and thought it must be another forest fire but I guess it was just the candles on John's birthday cake. ;-) Happy birthday, old hoss!
Two little corgis told me they thought it might have been your birthday!! Happy Birthday! Lots of October birthdays in this house including both corgis!!!!
Thanks John! I think Frosty is pretty awesome too. I love being able to share him with others :) I wish we lived somewhere with mountains though so I could get some of the awesome background pics you get. All we have in the background here is corn lol!!!

Unfortunately with Zoey's litter the female completely ruptured her uterus and wont be able to have anymore pups, which is too bad because these people were just amazing! All the pups and their dogs were in great shape. They started them early with house training and eating dry food. Are you looking for another one?

Legolas
Well to be fair, I think Leggy is a pemmie with a tail. And I think he is best described as a sable. But, since he came from a shelter, I have no background information. He was picked up as a stray. What I can say is that his personality is CORGI! He can be a bit of a menace because everything bigger than him is an opportunity to test out his herding skills (except for his parents). & He has a mischievous streak that is concealed behind those massive puppy eyes. I love this dog!! :)
