How interesting.  Maybe he is channeling his herding instincts to protecting if he doesn't have bigger things to herd.

Maybe it's the herding instinct, but Sonny doesn't seem to have any "prey drive".  My last dog was beagle/lab and he killed all the little critters he could find (bunnies, birds etc).  My corgi will catch bunnies in the yard, but he just holds them in his mouth while the squeal or he gathers them and holds them under his front fur.  When I go see what he's doing, he lets go and they run away.  My neighbor says she thinks he is "protecting" them because they were "seperated" from their flock.  She may be right, because he's caught 5 bunnies this summer, and hasn't harmed any of them.
