Check out the collar FAQ. We had a bad experience with harnesses like that hiking long distances. The harness we had wore a sore on the collarbone, and I didn't spot it right away; the dog finally just STOPPED and I carried it home. Maybe I just had it too tight.
I thought ours would be a good safety harness for belaying the dogs on log crossings over dangerous streams... but when I tried suspending the dog vertically in the harness, before a truly scary log crossing, Al slipped neatly out of it!!
Have you noticed that you never have to unbuckle those harnesses? Simply fold the leg under the chest loop, then the harness slides neatly over the head.
