Just a little deeper, please?

The weather is awesome in Austin, and we went on our first official hike today. Campbell is a little over 4 months, and I have been walking her a little more each week as she grows. It seems to be working, since she took on the 1.2 mile mini-hike with no issues. Her pads don't seem to hurt at all, and she stayed well-hydrated.

The only scare I had is when she lunged into the river when we went to the edge. I had her secured well, though, and it was a shallow part of the river; but she sure surprised me! I knew she liked water, but that complete lack of fear was something. She kept begging me to let her go in deeper. Luckily, there is a dog park island here in Austin where she can swim safely, so we will do that in a few months. In the mean time, it will be wading in the river, and a doggy pool on the patio.

One thing that did not surprise me, though, were all the folks who fell in love with her on the trail. It was Corgi-selfie-day at Pedernales State Park.

The first half of the hike, she kept stopping - I think expecting that we should turn back. But once she frolicked in the river, she took the lead for the rest of the hike! I am so excited about my new hiking companion. We are going to have such adventures.

By the way, it was John Wolfe from this group whose adventures and advice convinced me that a Corgi was the best choice for me. Thanks!

Very nice! Here's wishing you both many years of enjoyment.  Hiking with dogs sharpens your awareness of the surroundings and they are such good companions to have along.

Linda, that is scary - the Hudson! When she is closer to full-size I am going to follow John's advice for a modified Martingale collar. I gave up on finding a harness that works, the collar seems the best choice. BTW, here she is at 10 minutes and 3 hours, respectively, after we got home...

Great photos!  Looks like you had an awesome day.  Max loves the water too.  He will happily drag you behind him to get in.  My daughter and I had him walking a path along the Hudson River (in NY) and in he went, good thing my daughter had a good grip on his leash or he would have floated down to NYC.
