He needs to get over himself, he's a dog!

Update:
Well some good news! (sort of)
Today, literally right after leaving the vets office for 2nd shots, he pooped in the grass and I spotted "Rice". I believe to be roundworms... The vet cant see him again until Saturday (a day and a half). Should I get some OTC dewormer? Or wait it out? I think this might be why he doesnt like to eat.

Well, the last 3 days we have been struggling with Cheez-its anorexia problem. (Not literally). We cut his treats down to tiny little morsels that I doubt he can taste but he still enjoys along with a "good boy". I added some Yogurt to his food and he gladly ate a little bit, and then a little less and a little less. Today for his first two meals he licked the kibble clean of Yogurt but did not eat one bite. Now Joshua's "Bexar", which was Cheez-its littermate is doing well on Blue Buffalo and he said they switched from the Eukenuba because he thought there might be a slight allergy. So After two attempts today, (and he SHOULD be hungry today) I decided to go get some Blue Buffalo and give that a shot but Petsmart was closed. (Hopefully they even have it). If one of us are cooking in the kitchen, oh god, does Cheez-it think he's starving. He has never once had people food, and eats everything out of his dish. He will eat pretty much anything except for kibble it seems. I tried smaller bites, wetting it, yogurt(sort of worked), even heating it up for the little priss to no avail. Now he does chew at the hinges between his lower back-leg and upper (rounded-part) of his back leg(s), so Im thinking mabye he does have allergies. He has a vet appointment for his second shots in less than a week, and I will surely ask about it. Any other food-eating suggestions? He is still pooping ect. as normal he just barely eats, and I figured he was having to many treats, now he gets about 2 dog-bones a day broken into tiny pieces. Thats about all he's eaten today except for a teaspoon of Yogurt and he is still eliminating like normal and it is firm/normal. I know he isnt eating anything when Im not looking either, he is under a watchful eye.

What should I try? My mother suggested boiled egg-whites with his kibble, I'm not sure if thats a good idea? I cant get another dogfood until tomarrow unless perhaps there is a good brand at Wal-mart which I doubt. Even so, what food should I try? It's not to the point he's losing weight, but I do not want things to escalate.

Thanks in advance,
James (and Cheez-it)

(I have never had/seen a dog who doesnt like eating just about anything)

Charlie didn't object to the Safeguard taste, and he was a picky-eating puppy too! I gave him the SafeGuard once when he was about 14 wks in between his 12 and 16 week vet visits because he had a few rounds of loose poops and I wanted to rule out worms (the no-see-um types). I guess it either doesn't have a taste, or they flavor it with something yummy.

Just thought of this, how about mixing the gram of powder into the yogurt?

The vet did not worm him, they did it last visit and were going to do it the next visit. I know the SafeGuard site says at 8-10-12 wks, but that is really opinion, and I do have a very good vet. He is around 8-10 lbs. (I need to get a scale!). I see the dosage says 1 packet, and each packet is 1 gram, for 3 days. So literally he needs to eat 1 gram of powder. (About the amount of a paperclip?) If that's the case I should have no issue enticing him to take it. I did try some warm (and room temp) chicken broth, and he just ate the tiny bit as usual. If I have a sandwich (or anything on a plate) he thinks it's something amazing even though he has never had any. I bet he would clean my plate, so I know he has got to be hungry.

I'm going to pick up some SafeGuard today and see this evening if he will agree. He apparently has developed a second pouch in his mouth for the seperation of Yogurt and kibble, amazing really lol.

Dosage on my package states 1 gram for dogs up to 10 lbs. and 2 grams for dogs between 11-20 lbs. Dosage has to be repeated for three days. I bought the package for dogs Timmy's size so they are 4 grams each, but I know that the packages come in smaller and larger sizes as well.

James, how much does Cheez-it weigh now?

James,
Have you tried using the chicken broth and letting it soften the kibble. Not many dogs can resist it, but then again we know Cheez-it and his attitude. The amount of powder is determined by his weight, so I'm going to assume the amount for him would be quite small. Another method, sneaky, I know would be to roll some very tempting treat in the powder until it's gone. I always like to use chicken or roast beef or even liver sausage, hmmmmm. NOT!! but Timmy thinks it's heaven. Did you happen to check with the vet to see if they gave him a wormer?

Thanks Sylvia, he is flea free. My lawn is treated (safe for pets) and Cheez-it gets Advantage, and has no fleas what-so-ever, nor does my carpet. It is like rice-particles and only once! His next movement was normal. He does have a little belly, which I know is a symptom as well. I would try the powder, but I just know that feeding will be an issue. How much powder must he consume? I could get him to eat it, but it would take some by-hand feeding ect. I could do that if there isnt alot he has to eat.

Thanks!

Something that looks like rice is probably tapeworm. Call and ask the vet if they gave him a dewormer with his shots. (Seems like Charlie got his shots and wormer at the same visit.) If the vet did not give him a wormer, pick up some SafeGuard wormer. The SafeGuard kills tapeworm, roundworm, hookworm and whipworm. Other OTC brands only kill two types of intestinal parasites.

The vet would likely give him an Rx brand of fenbendazole (active ingredient and amount) as the SafeGuard.

James,
Could be tapeworms. I would buy the OTC wormer, (Safe-Guard is the one I use). It's safe for puppies older than 6 weeks. Buy the correct dosage for Cheez-it's weight and give it to him. Safe-Guard is a powder that's sprinkled over his food. If the eating is still a problem, I would make his meal absolutely delicious by adding some chicken broth or beef broth (low sodium better). Then keep checking his poops. It may require a second treatment if he's heavily infested in another 2-3 weeks. Don't feel bad, most puppies will have one or two bouts of worms. Tapeworms usually show up as segments (rice looking), while roundworms are those little squiggly things hanging from orifices. (Nice talk after breakfast, huh?) Tapeworms are related to flea issues and can become a cyclical issue unless fleas are removed from the environment. So considering he's in your home now, they shouldn't become a problem unless you live in an area heavily infested. If so, you'll have to treat him with a topical preventative and the environment as well.

You're right about this possibly being a reason for his lack of appetite. Poor Cheez-it, but better days are ahead!
