Hi gang,
My dear Deion's DM has been progressing rapidly. I have tried two different carts for the last six weeks with little to no success. It is heartbreaking to watch the decline of such a proud and kind fellow who has shared my life for near 10 years.
This past Tuesday gave me quite a scare. Deion didn't get up at all. He laid under the bed from early morning until early evening. He just seemed worried. I picked him up and brought him outside at this time and he just wouldn't eliminate. He couldn't get up enough to do so. Bless his heart he is too proud to ever soil himself. The feelings were quite grim as I knew this would cause great havoc to his body.
My dear friend Sharon made a "support vest" from a pattern I got from the Wheel Corgis list. We worked together to get the very best measurements to fit my boy. She has some very patient corgis that let her try it on and try it on again. I will be forever indebted to you Sharon. He did seem to accept this and walked outside with me yesterday. It brought me hope, lots of hope that Deion could stay with me for a longer time as it much added to his quality of life.
Today I decided to again put Deion in the cart. Mind you I have adjusted and readjusted it to make sure it is at its greatest comfort level. He did his usual backing up and then laid down. I decided to leave him be for a time in hopes that he would just try. He didn't seem quite as stressed has he had in the past so I just let him rest.
Time to take the dogs out so I called him toward the door. He took a few steps and stopped. He would not go forward. Knowing he most delights in chasing the other dogs I picked him up and took him out in the yard. He looked at them running anxious to join in but his motion impeded by the contraption that encased him. Suddenly he took a few steps, then a few steps more and then he ran. He groused at Krumpet which he hasnt done in months. He started the old race track he used to pursue chasing my terv boy. He started barking in the sheer joy of freedom to live part of his old life once again. He was smiling and I was just bawling. What a way to celebrate Independence Day. I dont think a better gift exists.
He is now tired but smiling. He came in, got a drink. Ran in to a few chairs and such along the way. Navigation lessons are next on our list. I removed him from the cart and he pulled himself in the computer room and did the roll of joy on the carpet. He was really smiling.
Thank you all for your support, your good wishes and keeping me going. I do believe I will try the video function of my new camera and take a video. Today is a day I will not soon forget.
