I go through a lot of trouble to have a good puppy. I got her at a time when I knew I'd have several weeks free to be with her and train her, I am very diligent about being consistent and about her leash training. I want, and have, a good dog, through work.
I get REALLY annoyed when I am walking my puppy down the sidewalk (her on my right, walking just beside me) and someone with a dog (usually several) on a stretchy leash is coming on. They pull all their dogs to the side, pull them up, usually wrestling with them, and GLARE at me as I pass.
GLARE! Like I'm the one with the unruly dog!
Hmmph.

Oh I know. I <3 huskies.

I said huskies because there is a person in my neighborhood who uses these kinds of leashes and struggles with their dog daily.

Some people (those who have not trained their dog(s)properly) may have dogs that do pretty well on a leash when no other dogs are around but behave very badly when other dogs are present. So, they become annoyed when somebody walks another dog past them. I am not saying that is right, I am just saying that is something that likely happens. When I walk Tiki and Cruise it's at the same time 3 other pairs of dogs are being walked in the neighborhood. Because several of those dogs bark and it is early morning, we've all kind of got used to the fact that we cross the street when about to pass the other set of dogs. No, not the solution (yours, proper training, is the best) but it has worked out. My problem is that Tiki is trained pretty well, Cruise is just getting there so he does get ancy when other dogs are around.

I def. agree in those cases that a retracable leash has it's uses. I just wonder, when I see people with huskies (no joke) using them for walking... where's the education? Maybe it's the only leash some people own?

actually the retractable leashes does have it's advantage in other situations, for example, when i take my dogs to the beach, it is my safety line, it allows them more freedom, if you have used a regular leash on salt water, you'll know what i mean.

Also when I'm doing yard work, it is better for me to leash them around a tree and give them more freedom.

However, i think it is crucial for beginners to start with a regular leash, it allows the handler complete control and it is the best for training as well.

The downside of retractable leash is the tangle and painful rope burn :)

Not only that but if they break, which they have been known to do, they reel back and can injure the dog owner. I can see if you are wanting your dog to be able to wander a little bit. But those leashes are really more for small dogs.

I've seen people walking standard sized dogs on those. I wonder what on earth keeps the dog from ripping your arm out of the socket if he wants to run? What really gets me is when parents hand those leashes to their kids.

TBH I don't know what they're FOR? They dont keep your dog from jumping on people, you can't keep a good hold on it, you can't correct your dog with it, they certainly arent keeping your dog from going in the street/people's yards/ infront of cars/ headlong into my dog... Bah.

Just give them a disgusted look back. Like 'what is wrong with YOUR dog?'

I HATE those retractable leashes. They are NOT good for dogs that don't know how to walk on a leash.
