Hello, everyone~ I just joined today! I have a 13-week-old Corgi female named Zoe. She's precious and we're having a little trouble with potty training her. I have read the posts about putting a bell on the door and have also read about the intelligence of the Corgis and how long it would take to figure out they could ring the bell to go outside and play..That was SO funny and SO true!!! I love watching Zoe roll those eyes up at me like she knows she's getting away with something like that. We do fine for a couple of days, then all of a sudden..BOOM...there she goes..pottying in the house again! So it's one step forward and three back! Any suggestions??? Also, her tail is longer than most, even though she is purebred. Just wondering if anyone else's Corgi does that...

Thanks for your input...

We use "out" and praise him like he just invented oxygen when he goes.

Hello Zoe and mom,
I usually go out and wait with Bailey until he does his business. If I let him out alone, he'll be playing and catching crickets and frapping around the garden and not doing his potty. If we go out and he doesn't do his business in 10 min, we'll go back in and try again in another 10 mins. Same training with my 2 1/2 years old girl.
Also to let you know that you'd probably see a bit of setback again when she's about 6 or 7 months. My girl Truffle was housebroken after 1 year and Bailey boy (now 9 months) is still in training. Most days he is very reliable but he's not to be trusted 100% yet. So don't be discouraged when accident happened! :) Just keep on doing the training.

I have a question too. At what age (months) do they usually become house trained? My friend said at about 8 months - is that true?

Up there I wrote "so we would associate the words..." I meant HE not us!

Welcome! Zoe will totally get it! I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said, just taking her out as often as you can and keeping an eye on her when she's outside and inside. With Grover, we said "go potty" everytime we wanted him to go and then while he was actually peeing or pooping, we'd say "go potty, good Boy!" We tried to say it while he was actually pottying, so that we would associate the words with the act. It worked for us, but it definitely took some time! Grover is 8 months now and fully housebroken!
It'll happen for your adorable one too!

Thank you all for your wonderful advice! I love this site! I have one other question...Zoe is having a problem also with peeing when someone comes in the door except me. I have told my son and husband to let her go to them, not get her excited, but it just happens every time. I've never had a dog do this and I'm clueless as to what to do here....sorry with all the 'potty' questions :(

Congratulations on your Corgi! Best breeds! My two Corgis took awhile and being stubborn, it took time so I think your Zoe will get it soon. My Corgis are almost 2 years old and I still keep a potty schedule...we can't remember everything. Keep everything positive and things will work out great!

My corgi is not too much older than yours. It took us three weeks to be sucessfully potty trained. My biggest tip.. take them out as much as possible!! I took him out every hour, and after he had eaten, every half hour until he went. Take them after they play, nap, or get out from their kennel. Make sure you treat them as soon as they potty and tell them Good Potty! Consistency and repetition really make a difference.

OMG I stand corrected.

Madog has just for the first time in 3 weeks of coming to the Shreveport Office been willing to go out in front of the building onto the grass to pee. The traffic has always been to much for him. He ran fast back in but he peed outside and not on the carpet in the boss's office which is his favorite spot.

So Kay yes there is hope for your leaky puppy who btw is gorgeous.

Right now it is all about anticipating when she's going to need to go... but the day will come when she'll paw at the door to show she needs to go out and you'll think it's just a fluke at first, but then it will happen again. And you'll marvel at how smart your little one is.
