i read something on here a couple of days ago that just really urked me. now i realize that everyone is entitled to thier own opinions and what not and a lot of people will probably not agree with me but i have to say something.
i ran across a blog the other day and a woman was talking about an incident where her corgi was attacked by a pitbull. now it is unfortunte that something like that happened to her and thankkfully her dog was ok. however not all pitbulls are killing machines as she claimed. and i am speaking from personal experience here.
the first dog i ever had i got at 3 yrs old, and he was a pitbull. he was the best dog i have ever had and i owe that dog my life.when i was about 11 i was out walking him one day and my neighbors 2 great danes jumped the fence and were coming after me. he didnt hesitate to put himself in harms way to protect me and if it wasnt for him i would have probably been seriously injured if not killed that day.
i also know other people with pitbulls. one of my neighbors right now has a purebred brindle pitbull that she rescued from hurricane katrina. her name is lily and she is the nicest dog you could ever hope to have and she gets along wonderfully with the other 3 dogs and all the cats as well. it is because she was brought up the right way.
my point is that pitbulls a a breed are not bad, like any other dog it is all about how they are raised. if you bring a dog up teaching them to attack other dogs then that is what they will do because the dont know anything else. and unfortunetly they are often used in dog fights and people get them for all the wrong reasons.
what happened to this woman was horrible and should have never happened but you cant blame the actions of one dog on an entire breed. i dont hate great danes based on what happened to me, im not even afraid of the them. what happened to me was the result of two individual dogs not being properly taken care of, socialized or contained. i blame the people who owned them, not the dogs and most definetly not the breed as a whole.
any dog can be a killer if they are raised that way.

i agree completely! my very good friend has a pit and Vader is the most obedient dog i have ever seen. She is great with Mini too, she lets Mini tug on her ears and tail and all Vader does is lick her to death. in MY opinion it is the owner's fault if the dog is mean and that goes for any dog!

i did not misunderstand what she said. she said that pitbulls are killing machines. and i know corgis can be mean too. mine has been. however the difference is i know what chloes problems are and i take precautions to prevent incidents and have taken steps to correct the behavior that i dont like.
it isnt the dogs fault and my point is that you can not blame the actions of one dog on an entire breed.

Hi Amanda, I agree with you whole heartedly. My aunt owns a pit bull, her name is lexy. She is the sweetest dog, she shares her home with a cat, a dog and get daily visits from children that my aunt babysits. Any dog can be trained to be vicious. Just like a child learns through the influence of there parents.

i understand the reasoning behind some of the laws that have been put in place but i dont really agree. it is very sad that these beautiful dogs are so often mistreated, abused and used in illegal activities. it is aslo sad that many shelters do not have the resources to properly rehab preivously abused pits. i was watching a special the other day on the micheal vick case and i was so impressed with the way that was handled. almost all of those "fighting dogs" were able to be rehomed and most with other animals in the house. there was one dog that was trained as a therapy dog and is now a working therapy dog in a senior care facility. however the only reason any of those dogs got a second chance was because of a privatly run pit resuce in california.
all my life i have grow up with breeds of dogs that have at one point in time been considered an aggresive breed and to this day i have yet to be bitten by one.

We don't even need laws against that. It's already against the law to let your dog damage other people's persons/property(read= dogs). It's a shame that even laws can't make people act right.

I, too, love the pitbull breed. I train quite a few of them. And I've had some "turn" on me. But one cannot judge an entire breed by the few who are irresponsible breeders/owners. Hey, I live in an area where the pit is a status symbol and used among groups and gangs to fight. It isn't pretty. And unfortunately, many of these dogs are not well cared for, roam the streets unleashed, and have been trained to be aggressive. It's a shame, really. I feel for this dog owner. What a horrendous thing to happen. And you certainly can't blame her for being angry and horrified. Most of us, when we're terribly hurt or scared, lash out at the nearest object of that hurt. In her case, it was the pit and owner.

The other thing to remember is that each decade has its dog: in the 70s it was the shepherd, 80s was the dobe, 90s folks were afraid of rots, and now it's the pit. We don't need laws against dogs, just irresponsible dog owners/breeders.

I'm with you. I don't argue about it either though. I just link them -> http://www.thetruthaboutpitbulls.com/

I thought that exact thing, but I've pretty much given up on trying to explain that to people. Pitbulls are just "fighting dogs." Yet I have never so far in my life met a mean pitbull. My best friend's pitbull plays wonderfully with her poodle and chihuahua (what a mix, I know), and he looooves Dax! It's funny, I believe he thinks he's a small dog, because he'll jump on top of you and sit in your lap. :) He's pretty intimidating until you meet him, but he's so sweet. Anyway, thanks for posting that. I didn't want to say anything, but it did need to be said...

Thank you for saying this. I agree with you 100% and while I understand she is going through some greif it made me very sad to see here say that. Pit bulls are wonderful dogs and before I got leon I was leaning towards getting one. It makes me very sad that people can be so ignorant towards the issue of dangerous dogs. Or dangerous anythings for that matter. I've always thought the problem was that the people who wanted to have a dangerous dog get the type that have been stereotyped into that and then will train (or not) them to be that way. Because it's in the reputation. I have yet to meet a friendly chihuauha or dachshund but all the pitt's I've ever met were wonderful.
