It's been a hectic week, so I haven't been able to write this post. Last Friday, my boyfriend and I were in a car accident. It's the first crash I've ever been in, and I'm still reeling from it. We were in Maryland for Matt's brother's wedding, which was the next day, and for which Matt was the best man. We were going through one of those blinking intersections around 11 at night. We had the blinking yellow, and a pickup ran the blinking red. Matt barely had time to slam on his breaks before we rammed right into the truck, knocking it over on its side.

Ofelia was in her crate in the back seat. And let me just say, thank goodness she was in her crate! Every once in a while I'll put her in the passenger seat if I'm driving by myself, or I'll hold her in my lap if Matt's driving. I'm never going to do that again. If Ofelia had been on my lap or loose in the car, she could have been killed or very seriously injured. Matt broke his wrist, and I got a facefull of airbag. It was a pretty bad crash. We were going about 30 miles per hour, which doesn't seem fast, but when you come to a full stop at that speed - well, the car was damaged beyond repair. Once I realized what had happened (I felt like I had gotten punched in the face), and once I realized Matt was alright, my next thought was, "Oh my God, Ofelia!" I jumped out of the car to get her out. But her crate was busted and the door wouldn't open. She was just sitting there looking at me. An onlooker helped me get her out of the car, and I was so relieved that she was okay.

After getting Matt to the hospital and taking care of everything it was 3 a.m. by the time I got to bed. It was such a hectic night, and I had to leave Ofelia with my dad at my parents' house while I was with Matt at the hospital and at his place just recovering from the sudden break in the stasis that was our lives. When I got home, Ofelia followed me around like a shadow. I slept on a mattress in my mom's room. I checked Ofelia all over, pressing her tummy and testing her everywhere. She didn't show any signs of pain or discomfort. And even though she didn't seem frazzled at the crash site, that night she slept right beside me all night. And she was especially subdued.

She was such a good sport about it all. She's such a tough girl. From now on, I'm keeping a crate in the car permanently, and she's always going to ride in it. This way I don't have to be lazy about bringing the crate in and out. I'm just going to buy a new one for the apartment. As much as I have enjoyed having her sit in my lap with Matt driving, if she had been in my lap during that crash she might not be with us today.

Anyway, I'm alright - just a couple of scrapes and bruises. Matt had to get surgery for his wrist, which was terribly splintered. But everything's okay, thank goodness. And Ofelia's still with us, too. We're a little family, the three of us, and I'm glad we're still together.

I just checked in after a long hiatus. Am glad you, Ofelia and Matt are OK. What a scary thing. I think that when I get another Corgi, I'll keep a crate in the car, just in case. I did when Chloe was a puppy, until she outgrew it. Then she liked to ride on the back seat with her nose resting on an arm rest.

What a relief that you all made it thru that ordeal and Im grateful that you shared this story with us. I never have had my pup ride in her crate while we are in the car but I am going to do the same as you and keep one in the car for her from now on. What an important lesson you have shared. Thank you!

I'm so glad you guys are okay. I was in a horrible car accident in April of this year and broke my pelvis and had to stay in the hospital for a really long time with lots of surgeries. It was the worst experience of my life and I'm still getting over it.

Even worse, I was away from my little guy spunky and couldn't see him for 3+ months.

I'm just so happy all of you are safe.

Oh my goodness! Thank Goddess you are all okay. A broken wrist and a face full of airbag is a small price for such a big crash. And folks think 30 mph is slow--until you come to an abrupt stop. So glad Ofelia is okay! So thankful that she was in her crate! I admit to being guilty about the kids being loose in the car. I think it's time to invest in some doggie seatbelts. Hugs to you all and sending healing energies. Kiss Ofelia for the Clan...
