Well... Computer died and finally got a used one to work from. As for Poor ol Kirby he's doing well even after a bad tumble which screwed up his hip and back (he went after a deer and went off a retaining wall about 1 mile from the house took me 20 minutes to find him) He is losing weight now that all the family is no longer feeding him cheese behind my back and his favorite godparents aren't feeding him things when he visits. We still have a ways too go.

OMG! Well I learned something about my family! It appears my husband has been giving Kirby cheese when he leaves for work in the morning and when he goes to bed at night... Hummm now I know why I was running out of cheese. We're going to have to put a stop to this.

Well We had snow for the last two days and I'm now dealing with my own snow plow (Kirby runs through the snow and scoops snow up in his mouth). We took a long walk through the golf course but not as long as we wanted because he had gotten into acorns the day before on our walk and has made him a bit sick. He was not happy with the cut down of the food.. He is being a real terror. Well what was the old addage this too shall pass? I hope he'll get use to it but I have to do something to get the rest of the weight down.

By hook or by crook we're going to get those last 13 lbs off of Kirby! So we're starting a Go Kirby GO! campaign. Like a support group for overweight corgi's to help get them through that hurdle. This will be tough as Kirby is just like a kirby vacuum cleaner. So any weight loss suggestions would be appreciated. I just read the article Moonmystic pointed to and learned while we thought we had him on tiny amount of food and he's lost 16 lbs he's still getting too much! Poor guy, he's going to be getting less. This won't be fun as he is a scrounger and has eaten through doors to get at food. He is resourceful in how he gets to things. So lets cheer Kirby on in the quest to shed the next 13 lbs.

I'm still working on getting our Lizzie down as well. She gets just a little bit of kibble (Canidae) 1/4 cup 2 x day, but with a small handfull of green beans as a filler. She loves the green beans and sees them as a treat. We walk twice a day and I can see a waistline where there wasn't one for quite a while. I don't know where we are on the weight loss scale, but she was 39 lbs when we started and she is down and I can feel ribs! She still attempts to steal food from the others, but she is certainly not starving. Although, she thinks she is! 16 lbs is a great accomplishment. Go Kirby Go!

And the chubby girl in the corner questions the statement that it's more difficult to get weight off a dog. :-)

Be patient. Kirby is going to ebb and flow. Some weeks he'll lose more weight than others. Activity and food control are the things to watch. The more Kirby does, the more weight (hey, wait a minute...this sounds like I'm preaching to the chubby girl in the corner...egads!!!!).

Congratulations on the weight loss and dedication to getting the pounds off Kirby. It was tough but when we got Moira she was nearly 47 pounds. It has taken about 7-months of being strict but she's now down to 29 pounds. With her build we feel that 25 to 26 pounds would be good for her. She's now starting to show a little bit of a waste.

We feed our dogs Bil-Jac Reduced Fat dog food. Moira, Dundee and Maddie each get 1-cup of dog food a day. Tank gets a little over 2-cups and Ayla and Ranec each get 2.5 to 3 cups a day. Period. They get 1-2 doggie biscuits at bedtime.
I adjust the amount of food slightly depending on how their waste line is looking.

Walks and other fun activities will also help to get Kirby's weight down. Don't give up - it just takes time. It's a lot harder to get weight off of dogs and cats then it is people. 5 pounds on a dog is an average of 15 - 20 pounds on people. If you send me your regular email address I'll be happy to show you before and after pictures of Moira. Hopefully it will give you encouragement.

the thing that keeps the weight off of my little bear (i feed him waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much, he gets treats all the time; and i mean 2-4 kong balls STUFFED a day along with his normal meals), is that we walk for 45 minutes a day and we go to a dog park every weekend (i live in an apartment, so it's a novel concept for us). but maybe give him some ice cubes with little low-cal treats in them. it fills up his stomach and he gets something to eat. but since we walk so much and we're so active, he keeps the weight off nicely. also, we practice his tricks. he used to have a problem getting onto the couch and getting off when told, so i tell him, "come here!" and he jumps up and "get down!" to jump off. the vet said that that is the equivalent of humans running up half a flight of stairs for both up and down. try it sometime, and we use the low-cal treats, too. good luck, keep us updated!
