I found that article online today. It's about the Humane Society of the US going undercover into puppy mills.

I have never bought a dog from a pet store, nor will I ever. I've always told everyone thinking about buying a dog not to go to a pet store, and they are horrified when I tell them where they come from - whether they actually listen to me or not, I'm not sure. I got a girl scout badge years ago for doing a project about this.

I was disappointed to find out that my brother just bought a Yorkshire Terrier puppy for his kids online, and the article says many dogs bought online come from puppy mills also.

Anyway, I thought you all might find this interesting to read.

and a side note.... sorry for this being morbid.. I had horrible thoughts of the puppy arriving either horribly sick or "gone" :(

It bugged me while we were looking (and reallllllly bugged chris) about how easy it was to buy a puppy online. It was so sketchy the pictures they showed and how the dog was easly "shipped" to your home. Without knowing they were from puppy mills (though it was sorta assumed) we still avoided this process because we wanted to meet the dog before we got it and also were scared that a lot of these online deals were scams. AKA money thieves.

Oh boy, this is a hot button issue for me. Being in "the business" I see stuff most people just shouldn't. And if the animal comes from a local pet store, chances are it is a puppy or kitty mill. I can name several so-called breeders in the area who supply local pet stores. Just a couple of weeks ago I had a woman who purchased a Yorkie and it died within 3 weeks. She spent a small fortune trying to save the dog. And I know who the puppy mill breeder was. But with weak animal cruelty laws, there's not much that can be done. Thankfully, PetSmart only supports rescue organizations! I know the ASPCA does what it can to improve the laws, but it is an overwhelming job. Makes you just want to slap the crap out of anyone you know is doing this!

I think puppy mills are so sad. But I feel so horrible for the little puppies that wait in these cages and then if they aren't bought before a certain age they reach, they are sent back to be used for breeding. It's just sad that.. if no one buys dogs from pet stores again, then these dogs are just going to be euthanized.. Or something like that. But I will never buy a dog from a pet store.
