I have been feeding Gonzo Science Diet since we took him home, as recommended by our vet. Recently I began researching dog foods because I know that some are better than others, and Gonzo has never seemed to enjoy Science Diet. I found that Science Diet really isn't the worst but certainly is not the best quality either. Gonzo recently went three days without eating, and since we took him home he's frequently gone a full day without eating. I think maybe he simply doesn't like the taste, so I've decided to begin switching foods. Additionally, he is almost a year old so I'd like to get him on an adult food soon. I do not want to use canned food, only dry. In the past I have found that my dogs didn't react well to canned food. They would have diarrhea that just smelled horrible.

In my research, I've found three brands that I believe are acceptable and affordable for me:

Avoderm

Eukanuba

Nature's Recipe

I am now having difficulty choosing a food. I certainly want the best out of the three. Is there anyone out there who knows a lot about dog food ingredients and what should and should not be in there? I would be happy to provide the ingredient lists for you if you'd be willing to help.

Thanks for any help!

oh... to answer your original question (about ingredients lists and what should and shouldn't be in there...) I believe if you go to the Blue Buffalo website, they have a place where you can compare the leading brands side by side with theirs.

I think I might have to give Blue Buffalo a try in a little while if Gonzo's diarrhea comes back. I've only heard great things about it from a lot of people!

I'd like to pipe up as another fan of Blue Buffalo pet foods. I too picked it up at Petsmart after listening to a rep. She gave us samples and Sadie ate it right out of her hand!

We use the low calorie stuff for Sadie and the puppy food for Rolo and both are thriving on it.

Now something they probably won't mention in advertising but I'll mention here because... we all own dogs... we know dogs poop...right?

Well, on the Blue, the first thing I noticed was less bowel movements. And when they do go... it doesn't stink as bad. I guess most of the Blue is absorbed into their bodies because there is less filler, there is less to eliminate.

They also eat less of it because it's highly concentrated compared to other dog foods. So when you compare price, compare that, as well. One bag lasts us almost twice as long as Sadie's previous food... so when you consider that, the cost isn't as much as you think.

I suggest you try feeding raw. I use the Bravo brand raw dog food and they have never been healthier.....it may cost a bit more but you will save in vet bills...Science Diet is the pitts I fed that to Bubas when he was a puppy and all he did was scratch....why because the manufaturer was too dumb to add fatty acids...that was years ago but i would never go back to dry kibble because it literally dehydrates the dogs.

Solid Gold (Hundchen Flocken Puppy) looks like an excellent food. Charlie's breeder had him on Hill's Science Diet, so I bought him a small bag of that, but wanted him on a better puppy food. Solid Gold was my first choice for a premium puppy diet. Unfortunately, he didn't like it. What? A finicky-eating Corgi??? He's sniff and run away from the bowl! We switched again and ended on Nutro Natural Puppy, which was not my favorite choice, but Charlie doesn't have to be coaxed to the food bowl. LOL At the end of this bag, we're switching again to an adult brand...hopefully Canidae. If he'll eat it.

Were giving Brynn "Royal Canin" dry puppy food which she likes but switching over to "Solid Gold" puppy . My cats like it and eat less of it . They have a no grain formula for adults dogs that i will use when she gets to that time. There poo seems so healthy after being on this food .Have you heard of this brand and what are your thoughts ?

Kiyo and I fluctuate between 2 the flavors of science diet- There's a lamb recipe and a chicken recipe. We also fluctuate on the flavor of the training and reward treats as well and it seems to keep her pretty interested. After reading they have changed their mixture of bi-product however, I'm considering changing to nature's...

Wow, thanks for your comments everyone! I had no idea that so many would reply. You all had great tips for me. I'm going to look into some of the other brands you mentioned and check their availability around here. Thanks for the advice!
