I have been feeding Gonzo Science Diet since we took him home, as recommended by our vet. Recently I began researching dog foods because I know that some are better than others, and Gonzo has never seemed to enjoy Science Diet. I found that Science Diet really isn't the worst but certainly is not the best quality either. Gonzo recently went three days without eating, and since we took him home he's frequently gone a full day without eating. I think maybe he simply doesn't like the taste, so I've decided to begin switching foods. Additionally, he is almost a year old so I'd like to get him on an adult food soon. I do not want to use canned food, only dry. In the past I have found that my dogs didn't react well to canned food. They would have diarrhea that just smelled horrible.

In my research, I've found three brands that I believe are acceptable and affordable for me:

Avoderm

Eukanuba

Nature's Recipe

I am now having difficulty choosing a food. I certainly want the best out of the three. Is there anyone out there who knows a lot about dog food ingredients and what should and should not be in there? I would be happy to provide the ingredient lists for you if you'd be willing to help.

Thanks for any help!

I switched Pumpkin to Royal Canin when we live in France. She loves it, no sugar. She has a nicer waist line than when she eats Iams. It works for us!

I think you'd be fine with either Nature's Recipe or Avoderm. Eukanuba is ok. I'm just not a fan of corn used as filler. Obviously lots of American dogs are eating a lot of corn and thriving, but it's not really digestible. It's just the most readily available and cheapest ingredient the pet food companies can get.

I'm about to switch Charlie from puppy food to adult and have chosen either Canidae, Innova, or Wellness Core. There is really not one best food for every dog, and it looks like you've done well to choose foods with meat as the main ingredient and fillers (grains) secondary.

One thing to consider is the activity level of your dog. If you have an agility athlete, for instance, you'll want high levels of protein/fat. If you dog is a "couch potato", you'll want a food with lower protein/fat.

The other thing is to compare price per pound versus amount to feed. Some foods which look expensive will only require less than a cup of food per day. A less expensive "looking" food may require up to two cups of food per day.

I'm sure you know to mix in new food slowly with the previous food and switch over 4-7 days. Charlie's was a picky eater as a pup (we went through 3 puppy food brands), so we're prepared to "trial-and-error" through a few of our adult food choices to find one he likes. To that end, I'd initially buy the smallest bag of the new food, not the economy size, until you're sure you've found the right food for your dog.

We currently feed Nature's Recipe. We used to feed Canidae when we lived in Wyoming, but we cannot get it here. That is why we switched. I went through about 5 brands before settling on Nature's Recipe. Trunks is allergic to wheat, so that is why I chose Nature's Recipe.

I also use Canidae - tried everything to help Kai maintain his weight, and Luna grow. Canidae works for us, and their coats are beautiful. I fill out Kai's need for more food with frozen green beans, he loves that - Luna steals a few along the way.

I just switched my dogs over to Blue Buffalo. I had them on IAMS, but the vet wanted to put Augie ona diet drug, aand ve.ry expensive prescription diet. I really didn't want to do that, thought I would try a "better" food. I went to Petsmart expecting to get Bil-Jac, but listened to the Blue Buffalo rep. So far, they like the food. If you go to the website, they have coupons also. I will update in a few months, see if there results

We feed our pup Canidae, and she loves it! It is for all life stages. Our breeder even fed it to the mama corg when she was pregnant with her pups. It is a little pricey--about $35-$40 for a 40lb bag, but it's worth it. It's natural and has no fillers. Unfortunately, it is only available in specialty pet supply stores, You can find store locations on their website. Hope this helps!

Years ago with our first Golden Retriever we had numerous skin problems with her. We tried everything that the vet recommended including numerous Science Diet Recipes and nothing would help. During that time a new small pet food company had just started and offered an all nature approach to pet food. We figured we didn't have anything to lose by trying it, her skin problems completely cleared up, since then all our Dogs and Cats have been feed only this food, included is a 19 year old cat that still has all his teeth which is not common for any cat at that age.

This food is called Wellness which is made by Old Mother Hubbard in Chelmsford, MA. The website for the Wellness food is "http://www.omhpet.com/wellness/". Be sure to check out the Old Mother Hubbard website for all the equally good treats for your Corgi. You will be able to do a search to find where it is sold in you're area. This food is only available through pet stores.

We have found that our dogs seem to like the Lamb flavor the best.

Pretty much all the "namebrand" dog foods meet all the daily requirements for your pet. I feed Purina One, which I am very happy with. I too had my corgis on Science Diet but they seemed to get burned out on it. I would stay with the namebrand dogfoods and NOT go for the off label or raw diets because they may not meet nutritional requirements necessary for your dog.

My advice would be much the same. Look at the first four ingredients. If there is corn or any grains mentioned there you need to look at others. I feed Natural Balance and have been quite satisfied. I know folks that love Purina Pro Plan and have fed it for years. Many others have been most happy with the Diamond products which are usually quite reasonable. There is not one best dog food. Good for you for desiring to learn what works best to feed your pal.
