Corgi versus Owner: The Battle for Sleep!

I sure got a talking to or barking to, as the case may be, a few days ago, while watching TV. Scout was sleeping peacefully at my feet when I began laughing, not obnoxiously or anything, but apparently loud enough to disturb the little man. He opened one eye and began to growl. Nothing mean and not in any kind of angry tone, but more as a warning to me that he needed his sleep. I didn't totally realize this at the time and paid no attention to him. However, a few minutes later I laughed again. This time he lifted his head slightly and growled with a more frustrated snarl and with a little extra gruff at the end. It occurred to me this time that he was mad that I had awoken him from his beauty sleep, but I didn't let on that I knew. Being the pesky owner that I am, I continued the disruption a few times more, just to see how frustrated he would get. Well, finally after about the fifth burst of laughter he jumped up angrily, came to my feet, sat on his haunches directly facing me and let me have it! He used different growls, tones, barks and words to make sure I understood exactly his frustration. When I had been sufficiently scolded, he slunk back to his original location and dropped to the floor in exhaustion, letting out a little huff as he fell. I sure do love his attitude and he, I will say, is quite a disciplinarian! I can't help but continue doing this to him because it is way too funny! Does this ever happen to any of you or do I just have a VERY bossy dog?!

Nichole,

This website drives me nuts! I can never figue out how to reply to a comment. Anyway, getting married? ! Wow! And I do hope that we get an invintation girl. Besides, I haven't seen the boys in a long time. I'm very happy for you.

Did you complete your project? I emailed you but don't know if you received it.

Let's hear more about this guy. And where are you living?

All I know is that when my boys find a way to get me to do what they want, and I let them, it becomes a habit. I have to pick and choose carefully what I'm willing to go along with... or I will need to spend time later correcting the problem I made. For example, Gibson (left) is the master of people training. Before I had a fenced yard, I would have to take him out for potty breaks. If I hadn't been very attentive to him on a given day, he would walk toward the door and then stop a few yards away. Then he'd look me in the eye, sit, and play deaf to my pleading to "go inside." And believe me, he knew the command. Finally I'd move to nudge him along and he'd roll over and play dead. I call this the "cranky toddler trick." If I tried to nudge him or get him up he'd just go limp. (Ever try to roll a limp corgi to his feet?? The neighbors loved that one.) The only way to get him to move was to rub his belly for about 30 seconds (little extortionist) and then politely ask him if we could pleeease go inside now. He'd pop up and trot in. Funny at first, yes, but of course it became a habit that required hours of my life later to break - locked in a stare-down in my backyard until he cracked. That was a year ago. Occasionally he gives it a try just to see if I'll go along, but I flat-out refuse. If I cave in so much as two consecutive times, it starts all over. My advice: care-ful!

Ha ha! That's a funny "talking" Corgi story. :)

Charlie doesn't seem to mind being awakened, but he surely lets me know when it's time for me to take a break from working at the computer and go outside for a "soccer break".

Charlie sits in a recliner about three feet behind my desk chair. He naps, chews on toys, gnaws on the cat's head (when the cat choses to get in the chair with him), and seems generally content...for a couple hours.

If I don't get up in time to take a play break out in the backyard, he lets me know first with a small whine. If I ignore him, the whine turns to play growl, then to outright bark, bark, bark! Then the whole master mix of bark, growl, whine in combination...anything to get Mom's attention. LOL

If I turn around and say "Speak Charlie!", he gets really quiet and looks at me like "I don't know what that means." LOL He has learned the play growl command "Talk like a pirate! Harrrr matey!". He says "hhhaaarrrrrrr!"
