Layla and Hunter were 8 weeks yesterday! We celebrated by taking them to the vet. They got to meet lots of friendly people and another (much bigger!) dog in the waiting area. When it came time to move into the room Layla came along fine but Hunter stopped at the door and pulled on his leash. He did not want anything to do with that room! It was strange since they've never been to the vet before, but I guess he could just sense something. Anyway all their tests came out fine. They got their second round of shots, and Layla cried, but Hunter was pretty tough about it. Our vet got us started with some free doses of Frontline and Heartgard. Since the puppies behaved so well at the visit and we were out anyway, we decided to try taking them to Petsmart. They've been doing well enough on leashes that I thought they would be okay. And they did great! Layla especially is taking to the leash nicely. Of course we're just focusing on basic walking instead of chewing the leash and trying to get it off, but Layla is pretty happy to go where I want her to go, while Hunter does a lot of plopping down and refusing to move. We're working on that - but for 8 weeks I'd say they're pretty ahead of the curve. They got to meet more people, including some children, which I was glad about, and they behaved beautifully. They also met a few more dogs and were very sweet to them as well. At one point, a VERY large dog - I'm not sure what kind exactly, she resembled a boxer but looked like she may have been mixed with something else - came over to sniff at them. The big dog's owner was very careful, holding her leash tight in case our pups were too scared, she couldn't come after them. Poor Hunter huddled at Josh's feet, and Layla sat there with him for a minute, but she is definitely the brave one! After a few seconds she trotted up to the big dog for a friendly sniff. I mean this dog's head was as big as she was! But I'm very happy about their social behavior. After about twenty minutes in the store these poor babies were just tuckered out, so we got some more treats for their puppy Kong and headed home. A pretty exciting 8 week birthday!
