Hello,
I have never posted a blog before but here goes...
Writing to brag a little about my corgi boy "Clive". We went through 2 obedience classes since I got Clive, a rescue corgi, in September 2007. This past weekend he took and passed the Canine Good Citizen test offered through the AKC. It's a wonderful feeling to have a well behaved dog and Clive and I have bonded tremendously through these classes. He does all the work, I just hold the leash!

If you have not taken any obedience or training classes I would highly recommend them. Clive is about 2 yrs old and had no formal training that I could see. He had good house manners but didn't know how to walk on a leash, sit, down, etc. He does all that now and it is wonderful. Clive is proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks!

That is awesome! I'm so glad to hear that. I struggle with my puppy to teach him. he knows the basics but the "come" he's not quite catching yet. So it is hard to teach them but right on you did good!

Congrats to you both! It took work from both of you to achieve your CGC!

Thank you all for your nice comments!!

Sam - I did not receive a patch or vest. Where does that come from? The AKC?
Suresh - you asked where I took classes. The rescue group referred me to a trainer in our area that has a large facility that teaches obedience, agility, etc. I did not go through the local pet store (pet smart) for classes although I am familiar with that route as well. I found the independent trainer had quite a bit more room to work in. One thing I like to do is take my dog to the local dog park and work him OUTSIDE the fenced area. It's great for attention work around other animals.

Can anyone tell me if this is how you answer someone's question on a blog post? Or should I be going directly to their page?

Welcome to the CGC Club! did you get a patch or vest?

Congratulations, that's fabulous! CGC is no small accomplishment.

I read through the test requirements every few months. We are miles away from passing the meeting other people and dogs nicely. Charlie's much too friendly and hyper to sit still and wait for permission to say hello. He needs to practice and mature a lot more.

That's great for Clive! Keep up the good work. : - )

Where did you take your obedience classes at?

I so enjoy hearing these successes, especially with a rescue dog. Spending the time training surely makes the dog owning experience so much more enjoyable! Kudos to you for being a responsible dog owner.
