Awesome day, bite wounds, Kong toys and puppy-puke of assorted colors and flavors.

I'm a little late in the game with this, my most recent blog post. Yesterday was an absolute awesome day for the little Cheez-doodle (Cheez-it). We started the morning with no fuss, took to the outside demonstrating gracefull leash control. I started "treating" after "potty" first thing. After the business was done, we went on a short little walk around a couple of houses. (Mabye 1/8th of a mile, but the farthest he has ever been). I think he took it as a treat for going potty so quickly because the next time we went out he put his game face on and did the deed then started our previous walking path. I was happy he went, and gladly allowed the walk. He has been here about 5 days now and has had his first day and a half WITHOUT accidents!! Not even 9 weeks old and already doing very very well in my book. I like to think he will be moderately indipendant in about a week from the 24/7 time he's getting for the next 20 days or so. Right now he still follows me around everywhere. I am suprised when he plays by himself for the 5 minutes or so it actually happens, well until I discovered the Kong ball....

After almost two straight days of good doggy behavior I noticed that he definately knows when I'm not giving 100% in our play sessions. So when I casually lean off the chair with a rope-toy in one hand and a graphics-tablet stylus in the other he knows, and "aarf's" for my attention. I wait until he calms down some before the attention, so he doesnt associate barking with getting anything. That is when I remotely long for him to want to spend some "Cheez-it" alone time.

Late last night he erupted in a multi-colored display of puppy-Purée. The colors and tastes no doubt resembled those on the ingredients label for pup-treats. Earthy-tones and liver smell, you know the type. I assume this is from the multitude of treats he consumed today, while not seeming like alot for a dog, I sometimes forget he has a tiny tablespoon sized stomache. We'll work on dividing treats tomarrow. I felt bad for the little guy, no accidents all day and then that, though he did make it to the hard floor by the front door as if he knew. He gave me that "I know your dissapointed but I can explain look", a real puppy-face, no pun intended. We went for a walk and came in and I let him lay down for a bit. He awoke a fiery ball of energy and while casually tug-o-waring him, while getting some design work done, he managed to jump up, get my pinky finger and hang from it for a second before descending. What was strange (but natural) was that he seemed to enjoy the taste of blood. (vampire corgi anyone?). I know it was an accident and didnt even yell, but god he has some little needle teeth. We went to petsmart and got a Kong ball, thinking mabye he will entertain himself with it. He has a Buster Cube, but it's the large one and he isnt intrested in it just yet. He hated the car-ride as usual, loved the attention from the ladies at the store (obviously, so did I). Took a nap in the house, woke up, went out, then it was Kong time. He pretty much loves it more than me, only pausing to bark in need of attention when he get's it stuck in the corner of the piano cabinet and pedal. And now he pee'd a little, so I guess all good things come to an end, I better go take care of that...

Now that I hear the name, it was a "Stuffin Kong". I did notice that the conventional dog-bones I give him either go in it and dont come out (which can be good), or I break them apart and they come out too fast. I might get the little treats that are supposed to go in it next time we go to the pet store.

Im not sure which King it is, It's not the Bubbly one though. It's sort of box-shaped with beveled edges and preforated sides so the treat smell gets out. You put hard treats in it, I wanted it to keep him busy and really didnt want cheese or peanut butter all over the carpet. He loves the thing and herds it around with his nose. Little Cheez-it has amazing soccor skills.

James, which Kong ball did you get for your little guy? I bought a busy buddy today by Premier and it surely smells rubbery. If I was a dog, I am not sure I would like this smell. I mean, if it seems strong to ME, then how incredibly strong will it seem to the pup? Of course, smearing it with peanut butter a time or two will probably help a great deal!

Sounds like things are going great with you and Cheez-it!

Charlie's training treats get broken down to smaller than pea-sized (about 1/8 - 1/4 inch)...and I'm not on a budget either! Dogs have more scent glands than taste buds, so they are working for the smell more than the taste. You can stretch treats out a long time and not be adding too many "junk food" calories.

Yell "Ooowwww!" when he puts his puppy "pirhanna" teeth on you, even though he is playing and not being mean. My arms were covered with scabs for about two months even though I "yelped" and turned my back on him for a couple minutes every single time. He was all play, not aggressive, but it took him a long time to realize his biting hurt. It's very important to teach bite inhibition as early as possible for your own skin as well as any children or elderly folks who have really thin skin.

Kong's are great for keeping a pup busy and content! Sounds like you're doing a great job with Cheez-it. Keep up the good work! : - )

James - love your blog and it reminds me of where we were with George not so long ago. I remember those needle teeth!

We're at 11 months with our little guy now and they grow so fast. Looking forward to following along with Cheez-it's adventures.

^ Agreed. He's going to start getting ½ his typical ¼ bone. I might even start treating him every other time to get him weened off "requiring" a treat for a trick.
