We've been considering a second dog for a few months. Zeroed in on corgi breed, and a week ago made a step toward seeking out one. With the help of the local Rescue Agent we located our boy that's only 2.5h away from us.
We are very excited about the new addition to the family. We'll be picking him up this Saturday. Lots of homework has been done, but I am always soliciting valuable input.
About him (we are still deciding on the name):
10 months old male
bought at the mall's pet store
very active
not neutered (vet's appointment scheduled on Mon.).
has fleas (and probably tapeworms)
housebroken (as the current owner said)
rambunctious
About us:
Family with 8 and 12 year-old daughters
2-story spacious house with fenced-in back yard
Currently have 8 year-old mild-tempered, well-trained, spayed, and flea-free chihuahua :)
I am a stay-at-home mom
We all grew up with family dogs
This is our 1st corgi. We want to be able to make this guy's transition into our family as smooth as possible. I am a bit concerned with the flea problem, but already got some good advice on that. I wanted to introduce my current dog to him, but am not sure if it's a good idea because of the fleas.....
He's also not neutered yet. Not sure about his aggression level. He has not been abused, just neglected. Not enough time and attention has been given to him. I don't want to overstep my boundaries with too much unwanted affection....if that makes sense.
Is using the crate a good idea in his new home? At least for the 1st week or so?
In other words, what would you do if you were in my shoes?
