Adopting our corgi boy this Sat. All input welcome!

We've been considering a second dog for a few months. Zeroed in on corgi breed, and a week ago made a step toward seeking out one. With the help of the local Rescue Agent we located our boy that's only 2.5h away from us.

We are very excited about the new addition to the family. We'll be picking him up this Saturday. Lots of homework has been done, but I am always soliciting valuable input.

About him (we are still deciding on the name):

10 months old male
bought at the mall's pet store
very active
not neutered (vet's appointment scheduled on Mon.).
has fleas (and probably tapeworms)
housebroken (as the current owner said)
rambunctious

About us:

Family with 8 and 12 year-old daughters
2-story spacious house with fenced-in back yard
Currently have 8 year-old mild-tempered, well-trained, spayed, and flea-free chihuahua :)
I am a stay-at-home mom
We all grew up with family dogs

This is our 1st corgi. We want to be able to make this guy's transition into our family as smooth as possible. I am a bit concerned with the flea problem, but already got some good advice on that. I wanted to introduce my current dog to him, but am not sure if it's a good idea because of the fleas.....

He's also not neutered yet. Not sure about his aggression level. He has not been abused, just neglected. Not enough time and attention has been given to him. I don't want to overstep my boundaries with too much unwanted affection....if that makes sense.

Is using the crate a good idea in his new home? At least for the 1st week or so?

In other words, what would you do if you were in my shoes?

Kelly, I was told he sleeps by their owner's bed, and not in the crate. I'll proceed with caution:)

How exciting! Does he use a crate at his current home? I'd say if he does, ask if you can have it and then he'll have something to make the transition smoother and make him feel safe. If he doesn't, I'd probably introduce one to him slowly (if you're going to use one) so not to completely confuse him and stress him out :)

The neutering will help calm him a bit (it did for our dog). I agree with Nicola, Corgis are extremely intelligent and quick learners. With kids in your house as well as the other dog, activity should not be a problem. Enjoy your new boy! Spencer has given us so much joy

It really sounds like you have thought it through so I think you will have a great handle on him. The flea problem can be cleared up pretty quickly with a bath and keep a watch out to keep it in check. Corgi's are very intelligent so retraining him might take a while but should be quick as he is still young. The girls are old enough to help and be aware aswell.
