Comment by John Wolff on November 4, 2011 at 1:08pm Photographers intentionally do portraits with the background slightly out-of-focus, so attention goes to the subject. It's called narrow depth-of-field. His nose and ears are in-focus, but everything behind his shoulders is already getting fuzzy.
You do this with a wide-angle lens (don't use tele), with the aperture as wide as possible; set your ISO film speed as low as you can (the "portrait" option on point-and-shoots does all this). Or use the "aperture priority" mode with the lowest f-stop (widest aperture). Get asw close as you can. Then you have to focus carefully on what you want to be sharp.
Your photographer, of course, focused on his face. But if you focussed on the tip of his tail... only Pembroke phographers would get the joke, and it would be a good one.
