We put in our carpet 3 yrs ago, and I've never had to clean it. It's held up very well. But I've decided that with 3 cats and now 2 dogs I'm gonna do it before fall gets here. I don't want to use harsh chemicals, I'm sensitive to alot of things, and I'm sure there not good for all of my furbabies. What does everyone recommend as far as carpet cleaning? Commercial, or DIY? If commercial, what companies? If DIY what machines and products?

Thanks KRISTIN & ARCHIE.

Hi Kristin! We bought a Hoover F7425-900 SteamVac Dual V 6 years ago and it works great. We use the Bissell little green for small stains, but bring out the dual v for the entire house.

We've used all the commercial stuff before and still think hydrogen peroxide is the cheapest and most pet / human friendly. I've also gone the diy route and used baking soda and vinegar, the down side of vinegar is the smell and you'll need to air out the house, but it does a great job.

As far as commercial stuff goes, I like seventh generation and simple green.

The Hoover dual v have been very reliable, we've changed the brush and tank once, we didn't pick the Bissel because they use fabric rollers. Make sure you purchase one with the heat button or fill it with hot water. Go to walmart / target and check it out, I'm sure Hoover have newer models now.
