My first two Corgis were lovely dogs, one better than the other as far as the breed standard goes and their sire was one of the top Corgis in America. Besides being a champion he sired over twenty champions. Never the less, I still had people ask me sometimes if my dogs were some sort of mixed breed.
A Corgi can be "pure bred" Corgi and still be a long ways from the AKC and Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America breed standard. I'd say that Bartleby is all Corgi but varies a good bit from the "ideal." Don't be dismayed by that, lots of Corgis, even most, do not meet the "ideal" except in our hearts. Also, he's still at that gawky stage and his appearance will change a lot over the next 2 - 3 years.
The reason for the breed standard is so that there is an agreed upon goal, and ideal, so that Corgis don't wind up looking very strange and weird because the breed can change in appearance a great deal depending on the choices breeders make when choosing which dogs to mate. Long ago Cardigans and Pembrokes were still considered one breed, not two, as they are now so if you look at pictures of Corgis down through the years you'll see that they look the same but still have evolved and changed.
All that matters at this point is that Bartleby is loved, well cared for, and well behaved. He's got a sweet face and very nice markings. A well bred, AKC championship Corgi is very special and lovely to see but won't love you any better than Bartleby will.
