Everyone that walks into my house sees our cute 5 month old puppy and immediatly tries to pick it up. He goes nuts. Trying to nip and furociously freaking out. I have a method for picking him up that does not bother him. We call it the "bathing suit". Placing your hands where a girl would wear a bathing suit (under the chest, Under the bottom). Is this just our corgi who freaks out or do all corgi's have a problem being picked up? I thought is was because it hurts when some big person is digging their fingers into his long ribbed body. he really doesn't mind being picked up when you use the "bathing suit" method. He likes being that close to your face to lick you.

Joey does NOT like to be picked up........RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!! When I absolutely have to pick him up I approach very slowly and gently and he's OK with that...anything quick and he gives a baby yelp!!! Yes, the tummy/chest approach is best.

I don't let anyone pick up my dog besides myself. If they want to hold her I pick her up for them. She only trusts me to pick her up and will snap and cry when someone else tries to. It probably hurts if not done properly, which is why Lola does not trust anyone else to do it. Good luck Paula =)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I always work on the behavior status of my dogs from pups. Wookie does not mind being picked up if done properly. I did state that in my blog. He does greet everyone with proper eticate (ears always folded back with a happy grin on his face, and his stump a waggin). He does not jump. He immediatly sits. He has been taught that for politness. I myself thought it might hurt, not a dominance issue. I do appreciate all your imput.

that is also how I pick up my corgis. My female freaks when she is picked up. My male, who is longer doesn't seem to care but he is really long so I try to be careful for his back's sake.

i am thinking maybe just maybe he is having dominance issues. he should be submissive when picked up. does he show any other dominance issues?

sadly kaijuu is in love with affection. i carry him like a baby, with his back towards the ground. i can carry him like im burping him. i can do anything ... but it is hard to support him since hes so long and heavy! haha otherwise he settles for cuddling =)

well im glad you have a method down otherwise you would never be able to pick up your puppy! and that would be sad =(

Poor baby! I don't like the fact how everyone just automatically picks him up. Especially if he doesn't like it. Maybe you should put a sign on the door or something?

The way you pick your corgi up is exactly how I pick mine up. She doesn't freak out over being picked up, but I am careful about supporting her lower body due to her long back. Did your corgi have a bad experience with being picked up wrong? Maybe he's just trying to escape when someone picks him up to try and avoid pain if something bad happened that way. If someone wants to pick him up, maybe you should explain how to pick him up using the bathing suit method. Just some thoughts!

My Ein gets scared a little bit, but he's fine...I guess. Although, I really bothers me when people just pick him up without supporting his upper and lower body. I always put my right arm below his front feet, and then put my other arm securing his bottom. I also hold him like a baby, all cradled up with his belly facing up, in my arms.
