Fiona in Heat, Signed for Basic Obedience

While we were in Korea, our dogs didn't get enough socialization and we finally decided to take them to obedience school so that we can try to break some bad habits. They are fine meeting people but big dogs are a different story. I worried about the first day. Our dogs can be a little crazy so it should be interesting. It's time to take some active steps into teaching them how to act properly around other dogs.

The infamous corgi bark intimidates other owners so it's been hard to socialize them but hopefully we'll get a little help at the obedience training. We've taken them to dog parks and Shorty does pretty well but Fiona seems not at ease and very protective of us.

In other news, Fiona is in heat but does not really seem like she "wants" Shorty but as a precaution we've separated them. We think down the line we might breed them once but haven't decided. We live in an apartment so there's no risk from outside dogs coming in. Fiona really doesn't seem ready and the dogs really don't seem to know what to do. However, we don't want to take any chances; apparently Fiona's mom had 6 puppies in the litter.

Even if we were to breed our dogs, I guess I have a couple concerns that I haven't really researched and need to look into.

1) Demand for corgis in the Northern Virginia Area (want all the puppies to find a home)
2) Fiona's and puppies' Health
3) Medical Costs

I've read that ultimately breeding dogs is a labor of love and for us we're probably going "cut" Shorty and possibly breed Fiona down the line, but I'm not sure if our love is misplaced but the finality of getting Shorty neutered is depressing.

Letting go of the pups is hard in away but when you really screen somebody and you know they are a delightful dedicated home, it makes it so much easier and these people are so excited they are like kids waiting for Christmas morning. Before I ever put someone on my waiting list for consideration on a puppy they must always call me first so I can talk to them on the phone and get a feeling of them. Your gut tells you. If they don't want to spend the time on the phone w/you and act as if this is buying a car, then move them along.

Great. No, my knowledge is just basic. I'm a college educated person and I've just read several books on dog behavior and have studied biology. One of my coworkers breeds swiss mountain dogs and I have another friend that used to breed german shepards.

My wife and are young professionals and I the think the time investment is probably the hardest thing. In addition, trying to find good homes for puppies must be both heartbreaking and rewarding. Anyhow, thanks and we'll let you know what we decide to do. We are definitely not having puppies this time. Thanks for offering your time and expertise.

I guess I was alittle preachy and don't want to come off as a snob, not that way at all but I adore these dogs and don't want to see any dog put in a situation that may cause harm. You have to pay back to them for what they do for you. You can't believe some of the calls I receive or situations I see and its disgusting. There are just so much to inform you of that its hard to put it all down in a comment w/o sounding preachy to get your point across. Not knowing how serious or the knowledge you have, I made my response brief and direct. You are more then welcome to call me and I can guide you in labratories for testing, links to study and any advice or questions you may have.

I appreciate you reading my blog and the comments. Definitely if we were to breed, we would have to do the homework and there is a quite a bit of responsibility. Fiona is on her third heat cycle so there isn't an issue there.

I understand there are hundreds of untold hours of research to ensure proper breeding. I'm not sure if this was implied in any sense but we're aren't even considering this as a business or to make money on the side. I guess we have a connection with our dogs and love the breed and wanted to share that love with others. Anyhow, thanks for info. You were a little preachy but also your comments reflect the care and effort that needs to go into proper breeding and taking care of them. I can imagine there are many people that get into breeding for the wrong reasons IE puppy farms. Thanks for reading and taking the time to write a comment!

When a female first comes into heat doesn't mean they are ready to breed. About 14 days later is when they are receptive and the males are showing interest. This can happen around 11 days all the way til 21 days from first day of heat. Never breed on the first heat and sometimes not even on the 2nd heat. By keeping a female unspayed and not used for breeding puts her at a risk for infections that can be deadly or demand the need for spaying. Just because you have a female and male AKC reg. Corgi doesn't mean they should be bred. Just because there might be a demand for them doesn't condone breeding either. You have a responsibility to the breed if you truly love them. You must do health clearances and lots of research to study the breed, health, raising a litter and know how to find the right homes for the pups. Its alot of time, dedication, and planning. You don't just allow anyone to have a pup if you really care what happens to that pup. The money is not the issue here. The money from your first litter if not the next 2 litters will be eaten up by the testing you should do, the supplies, veterinarian bills and the time you put into is less then minimum wage. You should breed for the ideal standard and pick a pairing that compliments one another not just any 2 dogs to create puppies. Are you willing to offer health guarantees on your pups and be their for the life of a pup? They were your creation and your responsibility to see they have a happy healthy life in this world for their entire life. Thats just alittle of what you need to think about and look into.
