So Zwei had the chance to meet a beautiful maine coon today ... so fluffy and big! Anyways, he didn't have a normal reaction to the cat. I mean, at first, he went up and sniffed it and it ran away.

After it running away though, he was going after it by laying on the ground and jumping at it. My fiance said he was 'stalking' the cat! I looked it up online and apparently that wasn't a good sign?!

We don't really get many encounters with cats since I'm allergic, but I don't want him going after cats that we do end up seeing.

Is this really a negative behaviour?

I had to laugh -- my #2 Corgi, Ethel Barrymore, "stalks" her uncle Bertie Wooster whenever we go on woods walks (which is about 10 times a week!). When Bertie falls behind, sniffing something disgusting, she will lie as flat as possible on the path, squashing her head between her paws and wait for him to approach (at this point, I'm usually humming the theme from "Jaws." Then, when he approaches, she suddenly leaps up, bats his head with her paws, and runs away with a huge smile on her face. Her ideal reaction is for him to chase her. But I don't have cats, and we don't know any cats personally (although Bertie does bark like a madman when he sees them on TV....)

It sounds like normal curiosity and playfulness, but if you want to be sure, establish a good solid "leave it" command. We use this whenever Sidney gets too rambunctious with our senior cat Hamilton.
