Frequent P-mail. Is it bad for them?

When we walk my dogs all seem to want to leave P-mails all over the neighborhood. If one goes, they all have to. A guy once told me that this is unhealthy for them. Has anyone else ever heard that? I will probably ask next time we go to the vet but fortunately no one needs to right now. (watch, I probably jinxed us)

It is funny this turned into a discussion on dog walking etiquette. Obviously that hits a nerve. I have always thought that the area between the sidewalk and the road is far game but there isn't always a sidewalk and not all loving dog owners spend much time training their dogs to pee on command. We did it because we were boaters and if the weather was bad it was no fun to stand out in the rain while your dog looked for the perfect spot. Now that we are campers it still is useful. When we travel, we don't always have a great spot to have them do their business so we try to find the least harmful of option. It is just when walking three (I know, a little nuts but I feel terrible leaving someone at home) they line up to pee where the first dog did. I will let everyone know what my vet says about possible bladder problems. Thanks for all the input!

marking is a normal behavior, however, it is best not to let your dog hang around those area, all it take is some sniffing of infected poop and viola! I agree with Wendy, it is best to walk your dog like you're on a mission, save specific areas for no.1 & 2. I actually don't mind other dogs peeing in my yard, as long as their owners pick up after their poop. Now if it's a flower bed or some delicate plant? that's a different story.

I knew what you were getting at, Bev.

I have not heard that frequent urinating on a walk is bad for a dog, but I can't be sure.

Thanks Cassie, It is ok, I enjoy hearing the different opinions. It is good to share, we all just want to do the best we can!

Bev, I think a lot of people took your question the wrong way, including myself. Sorry, made for some great comments though! As far as the p mailing being unhealthy for a dog, I just can't imagine it is,if your Vet says it is please ask him why and pass it on! Thanks, Cassie

We live in a quad-plex (older home split into 4 apts), and there is no fenced yard. So I walk Ella around our part of the lawn until she goes "potty", before we go walking - that way I more than likely won't need to use the poopy bags or stop at every tree. Most of the time we are out walking, she doesn't need to stop. However if it's warm and she's been drinking a bit of water, she may need to tinkle. Usually she does this on a post or a tree in the grass between the road and the sidewalk. Luckily since we are in a smaller town there is grass on the side of the road.
I've never heard of marking stuff as being bad for a dog. Perhaps if the dog is "holding it" just to mark stuff or is going all the time, perhaps there could be kidney problems. If you know how much your dog usually goes, then you will notice a difference. Some dogs will just want to mark something, but isn't really going - just making the motions. I guess just makes stops every now and then, in a "safe" area, for them to go and then move on.
p.s. I used to have a male "fixed" beagle/terrier that had to mark everything higher than 2" tall, lol. But only on walks.

Hey Sara C., I know what you're saying! That's why my dogs ARE NOT allowed to pee on other peoples property, yard, bush, tree, flowers, car or mailbox. If its private property, keep walking! Nose up, leg down!

Sorry, I live in a suburb too but it adjoins a park. I don't let mine stop at peoples flowers or bushes and I think people should be careful about that but the deer, bunnies and wood chucks eat most of my stuff even if it is next to the house and we have three barking dogs! So while I feel your pain since I can't seem to keep anything but marigolds growing I do understand when dogs that are going bye pee in my yard. I appreciate it when they pickup the solids though! If I walk in the neighborhood on the sidewalk I try to avoid stops in yards for people without dogs. I know it can cause a lot of damage. We try to finish up in the yard before we take off but it doesn't always work out.

We don't let Jack have a full-out pee in anyone's yard, but by the end of a walk if he's stopping to piddle there is nothing coming out; he goes through the motions.

I let my dog stop too if I'm in the mood. We lack a fenced yard, so while I appreciate the mindset that a dog on a walk should walk, the fact is that is his time to relax outside and sniff and enjoy. We also do almost all our walking in a big park with walking/hiking trails.

Jack loves his walks and sniffs, and I think he'd be miserable too without the chance!

I live in a medium-sized city, in a neighborhood that is more suburban, and we are hopping with rabbits and possums and skunks etc. Rarely see a deer, but we did see a fox and I believe there are coyotes. If my dog is going to catch something, it's more likely to be from the wildlife than from vaccinated dogs who walk where he does.

I live in a suburb, there's no bunnies or deers.. unfortunately. though if there were, I wouldnt have katie rubellas to get bleached!
More seriously, deer and bunnies dont get taken to the same spot every day to urinate. People have patterns and their dogs pick up those patterns. For many people in my neighborhood the pattern is one turn around the block. One turn around the block includes my hedge, and one dog peed there several months ago so now 3-4 dogs pee there twice a day, every day, during their turn around the block. Luckily wild animals have more freedom than that.
Some people even STOP their dog there because they know they like to pee there. Thank you people! ;_;
