I dropped Ellie off at the vet this morning to get spayed. I'm not sure which one of us is the bigger wreck. Ellie hates new people/places. I hate putting her through something painful and scary. I tried not to show it because the Alpha dog is supposed to be strong, but I might have failed there. The vet tech could definitely tell I didn't want to leave her.
I know it's healthier for Ellie. I know this is routine. I know dogs bounce back quickly. But I'm worried for my girl, and I can't help it.

Update: I got Ellie microchipped at the same time. She doesn't need the cone.
The vet has a VERY loose term of what "doing great" looks like. Ellie was anything but "doing great" when I picked her up and for several hours after she got home. She was shaking constantly. Eventually she came to lay beside me and we snuggled up under her favorite blanket.
This morning, she's walking around a little better and chewing on her toys. She ate twice as much food as she usually does. I can still see it in her eyes, though, and it pulls at my heart to know she's not happy. At least I see progress. I work late tonight and early tomorrow, so she'll have lots of crate time to relax, sleep, and heal.
Depends on the dog with cones...Bella wouldn't have needed one but our Aussie wouldn't stop licking when he got neutered...the vet tech will never forget it...the no lick cream didn't work and he had a raw belly. He had to wear a cone for 2 weeks:( Since I didn't want to worry I just had them put one on Bella. I definetly would suggest getting her microchipped.
Sarah - Phoebe won't have to wear a cone unless she starts licking/biting at her incision. Ellie never needed one (and neither did Yuki with his neuter) because she never bothered her incision site.
This must be spay week - Phoebe is getting spayed on Friday and I am dreading it. She is not going to understand the no food in the morning - I always feed her right after we go out first thing - and then the car ride to our vet is 45 minutes after which I have to go to work. Is wearing a cone standard procedure and if so for how long? My friend had her corgi spayed a few weeks ago and her vet has them stay overnight - no cone for her. I'm also wondering about having her microchipped and the pros and cons (if there are any cons) since I thought to do it at the same time. My vet doesn't have microchips so I would have to source that elsewhere. Is that so routine that people don't even think about it?
Glad to hear that Ellie is doing well, yay!!
I know the feeling. I just had one of my females spayed and I went to work. They called when she was done which made me feel better but I felt bad for her for a couple days. She healed fast and did well BUT my emotions had me worried too. Do try to keep her low key for a few days. Bella only wore the cone for a day...I felt sooooo bad and she wasn'r licking so luckily I was able to take it off. Watching her walk through doorways and get caught by her cone was the worst.
I just had Foxy spayed on Thursday and she did great. Of course I cried when I dropped her off. Slept alot when she came home but was right back to herself on Friday. Unfortunately for us, she tore the inside stitches and just had to go back today for surgery (he thought it was a hernia). I was a basket case when I saw her little tummy swollen. But once again she did fine and when I called they said she was up and about and ready to go. We are going to do a much better job about keeping her quiet, but the vet said it's hard with such a happy puppy. Can't wait to pick my baby up at 5:00. I don't mean to scare you, just want to let you know how quickly they seem to bounce back. Even with her problem she never seemed like she was in any pain and just wanted to play.
Update: I just spoke to the vet. Ellie's surgery was really easy, she's awake, and "doing great". I don't really believe that she's doing great because I know how easily she scares, but I appreciate their attempt at keeping me calm. I get to pick her up in a couple hours. I'm so glad the surgery part is over and she'll be home tonight where she feels comfortable.
It's hard to leave them but it is best in the long run for her health! My Ella was spayed a year ago and she was so feisty afterwards, it was hard to keep her quiet!! She acted like she didn't even have surgery. I had to put boxes up all over the furniture to keep her from jumping up! Good Luck! I know she (and you) will be fine. :) This site is a great place to get information and to ease your mind. I've asked alot of questions on here already and have had so many great people ease my mind lots of times!
Heather, don't fret, she will be home soon, and ready to be her old self sooner than you expected. Abbey has an appointment to be spayed tomorrow, and YES, I am dreading it too! lol
