My boyfriend just told me that Dex cut his mouth on some glass found in our back yard. Apparently the kids have been throwing glass in the yard ever since we got him. He said he is going to go talk to their parents. Stupid kids...

UPDATE:

Kid confessed and apologized. His mom wanted us to make him do work around our yard, but we decided against that. An apology and consideration to our pup was all we wanted. ^___^ Hopefully it doesn't happen again. Thanks for all the advice, you guys rock. :D

Oooh really? ^o^ Yeah, if it keeps up I will definitely make a paper trail somehow. Honestly, though, I think the kid learned his lesson. It kind of scares me to think that the kid was throwing glass in my yard to intentionally hurt my dog though. That, to me, is behavior akin to torturing squirrels and I hope his mom catches that as a bad sign. :( I know "boys will be boys" but how this went down really makes me uncomfortable. *hides Dexter in the back yard*

Glad that it all worked out! Hopefully this will be it and it is not the local Humane Society will assist in situation like this as they take this type of situation seriously and will talk the families and track a history of abuse. :D

What I would suggest is that you talk to this boy(s) with some empathy and help him get some empathy for the dog. Introduce him to Dex, show him what a nice guy he is, show him that the cut healed and he's OK -- this tells the kid 2 things: 1. Somebody nice got hurt here, and 2. It's not too bad, it's forgivable. Treat the kid like a dog: hey, you screwed-up a bit, but now we're friends again, right? I think the forgiveness thing is really important. You want this kid on your side. And once you're friends with the kid, you'll never have trouble with him again.

If you read him the riot act and call out the National Guard, you run the risk of making an enemy of the kid forever, and then you can kiss cooperation goodbye.

Something like this happened to me as a kid. I was doing something quite innocent which a parent (new to the neighborhood) completely misinterpreted as bullying his kid, and actually assaulted me, hauling me off to my parents by my ear (literally and forcefully). It was scary. All my friends witnessed it. This incident (and others) somewhat poisoned relationships with that family's kids, and tragically they were never quite fully welcomed. So be careful; you want those boys on your side. Give them a chance to make friends with Dex.

FYI: Al has cut his tongue several times on the soccer ball (yes, the soccer ball) and tongue cuts bleed profusely when the dog is cooling by panting, and they stop bleeding very quickly.

^^ Aw, thanks for the nice comments! When I got home I checked his mouth and I couldn't see the place where he cut his tongue, which means it wasn't too bad. The BF went to the neighbor's house and told the parents and the mom was really upset. The kid confessed and the mom dragged him over to apologize and even offered to have him work off his bad behavior. We really don't want to punish him, we just want him to leave our pup alone. :( So hopefully this thing is resolved. I was about to go Mommy-crazy on that kid, though. I am sorry to hear about your parent's dachshund problem, that sounded horrible!! What has gotten into kids lately?

:D Thanks for all the advice and concern, you guys are real sweet! <3

You should call the cops now. Press charges so they have record of it, if it happens again. Even if the cops just shrug and walk away, its documented.

Oh how awful! I hate to say it, but the police probably won't be able to do much of anything. If possible, you should see about setting up a webcam or something to catch them in the act!

My mom's dachshund was almost killed when the neighbor kids thought it would be funny to throw a bag of brownie mix over the fence one day. All the police said was, "Well, you don't have any proof, so there's nothing we can do." They didn't even go talk to the parents, nothing. So frustrating!

I hope your little guy is ok!

Oh no...sorry to hear. Hope Dex is ok...Dex reminds me of my Parker! Parker also had the white stripe fur on his head and one day it was gone! Just FYI, keep records (dates/times) of when you have found glass in the yard. This way when you report the incident you can show a history. Good luck!

Omg, is Dex okay? :(

That's so dangerous...I would definitely call the cops if this happens again.
