Any tips for me to help with Zelda's first heat? The pet store is closed due to the holiday so I picked up some baby diapers but she's not having it. Any tips or ideas on what I can expect would be great! Thanks
Do Not Leave Her Unattended Outside! She won't be in standing heat for mating til about the 10th day...we normally breed on the 11th and 13th day but some females ovulation can be earlier or later. My one female is later. She'll become more affectionate possibly and maybe decreased appetite. I use the denim wraps and haven't had any issues w/them. Diapers depending on the size of your female will be hard to fit properly..tried it and didn't work. Make sure you keep the pads clean so you don't cause an infection. The vulva will swell is a concern for bacteria to enter and cause infection..as she gets further into heat and closer to standing heat the vulva will swell quite a bit but then again all females are different.

We use a little denim wrap on Fergie that you put the pads in. She doesn't like it, but has learned to tolerate it. Lots of attention when she wears it--helps. You will need to be very diligent as Silvia said. The wrap is not going to be a birth control method. If there is a will there is a way. It will catch the blood drips and save you some clean up. She will certainly attract a lot of attention so don't take your eyes off of her even for a minute. Good luck to you. Thankfully it will end soon!

Kitty didn't like diapers,so,I bought fabric pants(for dogs) that have velcro attachments. They worked great! All you have to do is buy thin, womens' liners for them and change them often.
Lola is waaaaaay more attention needing when she is in heat. She will sit next to you and cry all day long. I feel so bad, so she usually gets carried around and a couple extra snacks =)

Since it's her first heat cycle, she'll certainly try to get the diaper off. You can try to put the diaper on her with some tape wraps around the diaper as an reinforcement in hope that she won't be able to get it off too easily. When taking her out, make sure there are no other free roaming dogs around. Cause the male dogs will certainly go coocoo over her even when she's a block away. Try to search the forum for pevious threads about dog in heat. Have a happy thanksgiving.
