How to deal with a long car ride with an 8 week old puppy?

Hi everyone, I'm going to pick up little 8 week old (will be named 99% Brian, still considering other names) from the breeder in October, and am not sure how to go about it. When I picked up Ein, he was 12 weeks old and just laid nicely on my lap, but that was a 40 minute ride. However, the ride from breeder's to our home will be about 4 1/2 to 5 hours. I wonder if the puppy will be alright like Ein? How often will I need to stop by and let him go potty? Anything else that I should know about?

Eight weeks is okay, it's the VERY YOUNGEST a dog should be released from their mom! Congrats on your new corgi! :) I would say stop every hour or so for a potty break, and bring lots of water in case the car ride is hot. Also bring some blankets in case the puppy is tired and wants to sleep :) Good luck! :)

Thank you all for the ideas! I am now better well equipped in bringing our Brian home :)

Oh, puppie wipes are a must! I forgot to type that. Accidents happen and it is harder to deal with when they get into the appolstery.

I would guess you will have to stop once every hour if he is awake. Miranda tends to sleep on car rides, so she can last forever.

Eight weeks does seem a little young, although it is SO HARD to wait to bring home a baby! Our breeder wouldn't let them go until 10 weeks and she preferred 12 weeks. I took only the top half of the plastic crate flipped over and lined with towels. A water bowl and a bottle of water were important, because Madoc was thirsty when we stopped for a little walk. He had had his first round of shots so I wasn't too worried; and we didn't stop at a rest stop with a public dog area. The breeder also had toys for him as well as his first collar and leash. He did cry for a few minutes then settled to sleep. It's a momentous them for them, leaving the comfortable puppy pile! I bet he will sleep a good bit of the way. Take pictures to share!

I picked Stella up whan she was about 9 1/2 weeks old and we had a 3 1/2- 4 hour ride. A friend drove me so I could sit with her in the back seat. I took a box lined with paper and an old towel in case she wet. I took the box instead of the carrier so I could play with her and pet her so she wouldn't be really scared. Half way back I walked her--I actually went to PetSmart and took her in and got some last-minute items! The necessary things to take are a collar and lead, of course. And something that I was really happy I took was a toy for her. She played with it A LOT! I expected her to sleep most of the time, but she didn't! So it was really good that I took the toy.

Here's a picture of little Stella coming home.

I would use a crate and stop every 1-1/2 hours or 2 but make sure he has a good collar and the items that Cassie and Jaunty suggested. I have had 8 hour trips with one of mine and Wynn traveled long distances with us at 10 weeks with no problems. We used a crate for safety and had the same as Cassie suggested in the crate....most of mine would sleep after a bit. I did always try to stop at a park or area with only a few people as this is a new experience and it will be less stressful if there isn't too much activity where you stop and no other dogs...as you don't know what they will do.

Eight weeks is VERY young!I picked up Jaunty when he was 12 weeks old and had a three hour drive home. Since I was alone, I crated him. He cried for about 5 minutes, then fell asleep. I stopped after 1 1/2 hours and pottied him, then he slept till we got home. Went real smooth! I guess I would reccomend taking a crate with you, just in case he gets antsy in your lap, and stop every couple of hours to potty him. And I always try to be prepared for anything, so I brought a towel, paper towels, a package of doggie shampoo cloths, water & dish, and a few Welness biscuits,(none of which I needed). I had a soft toy and a Nylabone in the crate. I LOVE the name Brian! Good Luck, I'm sure the car ride will go by faster than you think!

when we picked teagen up she was 6wks and didn't have her vaccines so instead of stopping to let her out we lined her crate with wee-pads and stopped to change them when needed. we didn't want her catching anything
