Last week I blogged regarding a repeal of Basil's Law...A law put in place to ban trapping in the right-of-way after the tragic death of my best friend Basil. The bill to repeal the ban will be discussed for the first time this year by the Nebraska Legislature on Friday, January 30. Please check out the original blog post and read the reponses at the end from Theresa and myself. If you are from Nebraska please communicate with your senator. If you are not from Nebraska you can still help by sending a message to Nebraska legislators. The repeal is on a fast track and I need to do everything I can to stop it! FYI Basil is the red/white Corgi in my profile picture. Thank you! Here is the link to the orignial blog. http://www.mycorgi.com/profiles/blogs/attempt-to-repeal-basils-law

Just a quick note. I am getting a bit of push back professionally by being active in the Basil's law debate. It is hard to be a lobbyist and separate your personal from professional life. Sometimes it seems you aren't suppose to have a personal life. Kinda sad.

Bad news. Ther first round of debate is over and we did not do well. They advanced the bill with an amendment that will allow a county to adopt a resolution to ban trapping, but that is meaningless. In Nebraska, resolutions are not enforceable so essentially they advanced the bill as a full reapeal. Most senators did not pay attention enough to the debate to realize that. It is truly frustrating. The trappers made it seem like we were getting rid of trapping all together by banning traps in the right of way. The right of way is just a very small portion of the state that is open to trapping. Consideration for the safety of people seemed to be a laughable topic to many. They continue to argue that legal traps don't hurt anyone and it is the illegal ones that cause the problem. I am very disappointed. It was hard to see something I worked so hard on two years ago move a step closer to being repealed. The bill will have another round of debate (Select File) we will continue to try to amend and change it, but it is definately an uphill battle. Thank you to everyone that has communicated with senators. There were certainly more letters delivered to senators against the repeal than for the repeal they just chose to ignore it.

Just a quick update before I head to the Capitol. They stopped just before getting to LB 5 on Friday. It is on this mornings agenda. The sponosr is willing to accept an amendment that would require posting, but still repeal the ban. I am working to leave the ban in place, but provide a permit process to trap in the right-of-way when it is necessary and would also require the posting. It is still my thought that the ban should remain.

I sent an email message this morning and received the following replies:

From Gwen Howard:
"Thank you for letting me know of your views on LB 228.
As you know, the Education Committee has heard this legislation in previous years. I will certainly listen to the testimony when LB 228 is heard and I will keep your views in mind as we move forward."

From Tony Fulton:
"Thanks for your email. I have great interest in sportsman issues, and I appreciate hearing your rationale as I’m undecided on this bill presently. I’ll bear your advocacy in mind."

Good luck to you. It would be terrible if they pass the repeal.

This is a response I have gotten from another e-mail I sent out.
I oppose LB 5.
Thank you,
Senator Abbie Cornett

Best of luck. I remember reading your first blog post and thought it was just utterly horrible what happened.

Oh wow, I just read your original post & wanted to cry. I am so sorry you're having to deal with this, but if you can help to save someone elses' pet or even child from getting hurt this way, that is outstanding. Good luck!!!
