Maisy Story - Corgis are too darn smart!

I like to share stories about how very smart my dogs are so here is one.

My dogs had a favorite ball that they often "fought" over. A few weeks ago it was getting pretty torn up and was muddy from the yard. I finally decided it wasn't safe and I didn't feel like washing it anyway so I put it up on a shelf in my laundry room which is attached to my dining room. The dogs asked for it several times but I would say "no". They gave up more than two weeks ago.

This morning, Maisy was crying in my dining room. It was dark in there so I turned on the light and she was sitting by the edge of the dining room table begging for a toy I had put on the table to get it out of the way while working with them yesterday. I gave her the toy. She ran around happy for a few moments.

Suddenly I heard her begging and whining again. It sounded like it was in the dining room again. I went in and turned on the light. I didn't see her right away until I walked to the open laundry room door. There she was sitting under the shelves and staring at that silly old ball.

It's quite amazing how she put 2 and 2 together and figured since I seemed to be in a generous mood...........

It's also amazing that she was still thinking about that old ball. So smart!!

Corgis? Smart?
Corgis? Smart?
Al is a ball-hog, so I started throwing 2 tennis balls, one for Al, one for Gwynnie. I'd wait until Al was almost back to me with his ball in his mouth before throwing G's. Al would reverse in mid-stride, chase down Gwynn's ball (with his own ball still in his mouth), and face a basic logic problem:
How to retrieve 2 balls with one mouth? Simple: just drop the ball in his mouth and pick up the one on the ground. After doing this several times, alternating balls and making himself look dumber than a cherrystone clam, he'd trying herding the ball on the ground with his feet. If, at this point, I throw a third ball, he'd forget all about the first two and chase after the third.

Actually, this is perfect dog logic: a ball on the ground is worth more than a ball in the mouth, and a moving ball is worth more than a stationary ball.

I hate to admit it but no. Although, in similar circumstances, I often let her "win". I like to encourage the "thinking" and the interaction.

But....this time no.

So, no one is asking the important question. Did she get the ball?

Good one!

Similar things happen here. I have to say my corgi is the sneaky and coniving one. I know my GSD is just as smart, but in different ways I think. The corgi however is always trying to figure out how to fool my GSD. Like barking at the door so the GSD gets up to check things out then Maisy will run over and steal the best, and warm, spot on the couch. LOL

One evening we were playing ball with both Soffie and Griffyn. There were two tennis balls, but only had the "squeaky" still intact. It got to the point where both wanted the ball that squeaked. We saw Soffie get the desired ball.....remove it away from Griffyn, and then dropped it back behind their toy box. Then she found the other ball and got him interested in that ball.....problem solved for her.....she took the other ball out of play! She has always been so darn smart!! It just amazes us.
