Wow, thanks for all the tips, Sam! Really appreciate it. :) I'll have to update my list now! I didn't realize chip bags could be so dangerous, I'll definitely keep that in mind.
And thanks Heidi, I believe I actually have some bitter apple spray I used a while ago with my degus. I'll have to find it.
Hi Janna,
You'll want to get a life stage 36 wire crate or a 36 plastic airline approved crate (should you ever fly) You can also create your own partition with plywood.
Instead of a scent removing cleaner, get 6 bottles of hydrogen peroxide (walmart) and baking soda. You can make your own enzyme cleaner with orange citrus peel.
I am not a fan of Harness, they encourage pulling. Martingale works best.
screw in the ground tie outs (dollar store)
Non scented baby shampoo are cheaper / safer than most out there.
Bio degradable poop bags (dollar store).
Saline solution for cleaning eyes / rinsing.
Tweezer
Tick Key
Furminator
Don't invest in a pricey dog bed until the age of 2
unscented human baby wipes
Educate your family on pesticide
Walk your dog rain or shine, 24/7, no excuses. Hire a dog walker / responsible teenage if you need to.
Get a good rain coat, it is impossible to pick up poop with a pulling pup while holding an umbrella under high wind situation.
Headlamp for picking poop at night.
Always leash your dog to go potty, even at home.
Always leash your dog BEFORE opening car doors
Always cut up chip bags/ food bags and dispose them in secure lids. (we've lost 4 corgis on Mycorgi.com this way)
Shop for a good vet, then a second vet for backup.
Save $2K for emergency vet fund. (1 trip will cost 1K+)
Introduce a new food by mixing gradually in 1 week.
Keep original dog food bag / write down lot info , check for upcoming recalls.
Keep anything you don't want to be eaten, chewed, destroyed off the floor, including coffee table, couch. See the hit list.
Get everyone in your household onboard, make sure they follow your rules, remind your guest too.
I would also get the bitter spray to discourage chewing on inappropriate items. We used this in the first couple weeks with Ruby at home until she learned her toys vs. other things like cords.
