I'm not vet-groomer-specialist-anything.  But we did have a shaving experience with the groomer.  I said 'trim her up for summer' and I came back to find Loo cut down to her undercoat.  Freaked me out.  I must have a smart groomer because she said that cutting them down to the undercoat would allow the hair to grow back healthy.  Taking it down all the way and it would not grow back as well.

My husband and I have had many discussions about shaving.  We asked the vet-the vet said it would not grow back and she would lose her 'waterproofness.'  My dog only gets in the water for a bath.  She is a 100% inside dog.

She got shaved down on St. Patrick's day.  It was unseasonably warm in March in Indiana and we came to find that the low trim was keeping her cooler than before.  She is much more easy to maintain (grooming) wise.  Brushing takes half the time.

The picture below is of our Dyson.  Normally it's full to the top.  After a week, it's only half full.  Her hair is shorter, lighter and not as soft but it is growing back and she is getting back to her orange self again.

So I'm not endorsing shaving or saying it will work for everyone.  I'm saying it wasn't as bad as we expected it to be.  My tumblr has some pics of Loo before and after.  There are even pics of her at the groomers with all the hair!  I can hardly tell the difference anymore in pictures.

I know this is quite late to post on this ... but was exactly what I was looking for. I took Tobi to the groomers to shorten him up just a little bit (his pants and belly were starting to get a little out of control) and returned to discover a nearly-shaved puppy! Needless to say, I wasn't too happy. I now have a gray back thanks to having his white undercoat exposed. Right now it doesn't seem to bother him, but still worry a bit that it won't come back the same. This gives me a little glimpse of hope though. Thank goodness there are some cool sweater/jackets out right now til it grows back. :-(

Insects are something to consider.  Not a problem for an indoor dog.  Flies and mosquitoes can be literally maddening in the mountains.  The long fur seems to exclude flies and mosquitoes except around their snout.  Maybe another use for a tail. too.

Yes, just let them know not to shave down to the skin and take off the topcoat. Exposed skin leads to sunburn. Leaving the undercoat seems to be working for us. I believe she just used a set of trimmers with a guard on it so she wasn't taking it all down.

Hmm! Not too shabby...I wish our vaccuum cleaner looked like that! My sister works at PETCO and she got about three phone calls in the past few weeks asking if their groomers could shave a corgi...LOL! So what do you tell the groomer? Just to shave down to the undercoat?
