Last night, my sister's dog, Charlotte, got really sick. She started vomiting blood and having bloody stools and acting very lethargic and "out of it" during the night. She took her to the emergency vet and they assessed her and she was dehydrated and had some sort of gastroenteritis. They wanted to admit her, but it was going to cost $1200, and frankly, my sister doesn't have that kind of money. So they told her how to treat her at home and gave her medicine. She took her to my mom's house and they stayed up through the night with her and cared for her. She seemed to be doing better today, and so my sister took Charlotte back to her own vet for follow-up. They gave her more fluids (literally filling up the scruff of her neck), and more medication. The vet said that they don't know what caused it and they wouldn't know unless they run lots of tests, which isn't really necessary at this point.

I'm glad Charlotte is doing better, but I'm a little nervous now because she spent the weekend at my house while my sister was in the mountains. Now, this issue might have been caused from stress, but it could be other things too. Lauren asked the vet if it could be contagious and he said there is a chance. So, Ginny was exposed to Charlotte the whole weekend just the day before Charlotte got so sick. Ginny seems absolutely fine, but the vet suggested that, just to be safe, I should feed her a bland rice/chicken/cottage cheese and yogurt diet and quarantine her from other dogs for a while. I certainly hope she doesn't get ill. It sounds miserable and I would hate for Ginny to go through that. Anyhow, if anyone has any suggestions for things I can do to keep Ginny from possibly getting sick or if you have any info about stomach maladies, I would love to know.

Thanks!

Ginny's still doing fine... hopefully we dodged a bullet. Still have her on the rice and chicken diet, but will probably put her back on kibble this weekend. Thanks for everyone's info.

aww poor girl :( ein had some blood in his stool when we first took him home from the breeder. we had planned to take him to the vet to have him checked out anyway, so it was definitely more of a reason to do so. they ran the usual tests and they told us that he was just stressed out. all the tests came up negative for anything serious or parasitical. i did some strong reading up on this subject and i agree that it may be hookworms or she was just stressed. corgis are very emotional dogs and even moving them to a new location or even separation can cause them to get upset stomachs. hope she feels better!!!

Did the dog get checked for Hookworm? My dog had a lot of the same symptoms and it ended up being Hookworm which can be tricky to treat but needs to be done right away since hookworms can kill a dog in a very short time span. It's a simple stool test and worth the $! Watch for blood in the poop and any vomit at all..that is a good sign of hookworm usually..

She might have been alot worse from being stressed w/your sister gone and being w/you otherwise she might of just vomitted once and had some diarrhea. Just watch your dog carefully and the first signs of it start treating it. Hope she doesn't. Make sure you clean up w/bleach and pick up all stools in the yard asap.
