Peanut Butter Salmonella Risk Spreads to Dog Treats

Saw this coming through the feed this morning. Links to the article at the bottom of the post.

Synap:

Some of the salmonella-tainted peanut butter was used to flavor/fill certain treats. Petsmart voluntary recalls "Great Choice" Peanut butter flavored biscuits.

I'm not clear on whether this is preemptive or if dogs have become ill. There doesn't seem to be reported cases of dogs infected with salmonella, but I imagine that Petsmart does get their peanut butter from the effected plant and that's while they're recalling. The second article I read said that poison control discourages people from giving dogs recalled products but also adds that healthy dogs are not very susceptible to salmonella. I guess it is probably something you should look out for if your dog is older.

The article states:
"What to look for if you suspect your dog has eaten tainted dog treats or food:

Lethargy
Fever
Vomiting
Diarrhea, which may contain blood or mucous

If you suspect your dog is ill, a trip to the vet right away is in order. In addition:

Wash all of your dog's bedding with a little bit of bleach.
Clean up all feces from the yard, dispose of it in sealed plastic bags or containers, and spray a mild bleach solution where the feces had been.
When your dog is well enough, bathe him with his regular shampoo to remove any possible traces of salmonella.
Wash your hands in warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds to rid yourself of potential contamination."
