Periodically, I check Petfinder to see if there are any Corgis in kill shelters in my area. I am happy to report that in several years of looking, I have not seen any. I have seen some puppy-mill rescues or owner surrenders in no-kill shelters within a few hundred miles of here, but that's about it.
I do see a TON of "Corgi mixes."
There are almost no Corgi breeders anywhere near me, and all the pets I've ever met (there aren't many) are neutered. In other words, there would seem to be a general lack of intact Pems running around to be birthing or siring all these "mixes." Photos of these dogs generally shows a dog that no more resembles a Corgi than I resemble Halle Berry. What these dogs DO have, though, is short legs and larger bodies than a Dachshund would have.
The dogs may be solid-colored, round-faced dogs with flop ears, but if they have short legs, they get dubbed "Corgi mixes."
The reason for my annoyance is that there are several causes of dwarfism in dogs, and the genetic mutation that causes dwarfism in the Corgi predates the breed by a long stretch. In other words, there were short-legged mutts running around long before the breed fancies closed the studbooks and came up with what we in modern times label purebred dogs.
Every short-legged dog out there is NOT descended from a dwarf breed. Some are spontaneous mutations or other deformities.
Yet they get labeled "corgi" and sent on their way. I know shelter workers are volunteers, and I know they are just guessing, but I suppose I just wish that they learned a little bit more before randomly assigning breed labels to dogs!

This black-and-white dog with ticking is called a "Dachshund-Corgi mix"

Not a big deal, really. Just frustrating to look online and see this all. the. time.

Yes, I know. I'm the "picky" one still looking for a Corgi and have to go thru a lot of pages on petfinder just to find a dog that looks like what I had in mind.
