So, I bought a Corgi zine today because it seemed like it had good info in it. It upset me when I got to the nutrition section and it suggested grapes (which I know to be highly toxic) as a good treat for dogs so I figure that I should take anything else it says with a grain of salt.

The thing that made me curious is this, it suggested that I feed my puppy large breed kibble formula to help regulate his bone growth. Your thoughts?

Science have not narrow down what exactly causes the renal failure yet, they started document it around 10 years ago. In the medical community, we use the PDR and merck manual, here's a vet version.

When Duncan was young, he was limping some, so I took him to the vet. Same reasons that Beth mention is why I was told to give it to him.

I used large breed puppy food when Wynn was a pup. Yes, I believe it is better for them but now I feed them Canidae (all life stages) so I only need one food. What Beth says is correct about why you would feed large breed food. and also my all life stages has only 24% protein. I also fed Wynn grapes up until a few years ago (he is 5) as I never heard of this till maybe 2-3 years ago!

What was the original publication date of the magazine? The discovery that grapes are toxic is very recent, and I distinctly remember a time not so long ago when reputable trainers suggested raisins as a good treat (which of course are even worse than grapes, being concentrated). So that does not mean the other info in the magazine is bad; you can't fault someone for not being aware of research that was not available at time of publication (though the makers of the magazine should go back and do a reprint).

My breeder recommended large breed puppy food and she's been breeding and showing with much success for 30 years. Puppy foods can have very high protein levels that cause puppies to grow fast. There are some that think that the too-fast growth is a cause of some bone/joint issues we see in larger breeds. Large-breed puppy food has lower protein levels. Corgis are not a large breed but do have large bone and other issues due to their dwarfism, hence the recommendation. Some will say you don't need puppy food at all, but puppy food does have some other nutrients that not all adult kibble has (DHA, for example, is important to brain development. Commonly found in fish and wild game but not in farm-raised meat, it is added to better puppy foods but not to all adult kibble).
