I got my puppy yesterday too! The first day went really well! He slept in his kennel all night..(i played hard with him before bed time) and he is going outside too! Jane is right...take him out alot. When Odin starts sniffing around I say.."lets go out"..and i tap his paw on a bell..lol hes getting it.Have a fun day with him and enjoy his little puppy naps!

Good stuff, Jane. But I disagree with pushing his butt down. This creates oppositional resistance and he will learn to push against the hand. I simply take a treat, slowly move over his head til his butt hits the ground and add the "sit" verbal command. If he's not liking putting his butt down, you can very gently put your forearm behind his back knees and they will automatically bend putting him in a sit.

And Anastasia...congrats on a CUTE puppy. Scoots is simply adorable!

congratulations!!!!! You gonna love him sooooo much! My advice to you is to socialize him as much as you can. Not only with your cat.... My dog is so sweet and calm at home but goes crazy at a dog park from not seeing other dogs enough when he was a puppy.

Congratulations! He is very cute! There's alot of info on here already and you can always post but I have a couple thing that I do when my pups come home that I believe are important.
.1. When he comes up to I would gently push his but down and say "sit"...he is too young to train but this will get him in the habit and it works well so he learns to approach a person and sit to wait for them to give him a pet etc.
2. Start right away with handling his food and pretend to eat with him so he learns how to share and be food aggressive!
3. Give him his space, crate area so that either he gets comfortable with this and learns he can go there but also can have his own refuge.
4.Take him out as often as you can (every 2 hours)and when he goes potty outside say "potty, pee" or whatever
word you want to use so that he starts to get the idea!.
5.Get him used to a collar and even let him drag a small leash but you won't be able to train him with this yet you are setting him up for this!
6.After he has his shots...make sure you socialize him with people(you can do this b/4) and other dogs but slowly...he is a very young one!
Hope this makes sense...but it works to set up those gentle boudaries for a happy dog early in life! Good luck and ENJOY!
