They don't get enough adopters, don't have enough cages for all the animals, and are required by law to continue taking in any animals the public brings them.
They are short staffed because they are government funded and people tend to vote for education as a priority over animal care, so they dont always have enough employees or volunteers to answer the phones, and when they do, hold times can be long. Please don't give up on this animal in need!!!!!
If you are able to reach the shelter's call center, they can give you the updated availability of the animal. If it is available, you should ask to be transferred directly to the Downey shelter itself. Then ask them to note on the animals record your name, phone number, and when you are coming to meet the dog, in hopes they will keep it alive until your arrival.
Then PLEASE VISIT THE SHELTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IN PERSON.
PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING AT THE DOWNEY SHELTER http://animalcare.lacounty.gov
Summer is the time when the shelter is most crowded and volunteers are needed the most. There is usually a 2-3 month wait before volunteer orientation is available so please apply now to be a volunteer so you will be approved by the summer.
PLEASE NOTE: THE SHELTER DOES NOT HAVE EMAIL AND THE EMAIL GIVEN ON THIS WEBSITE DOES NOT REACH THE DOWNEY SHELTER. It only reaches the volunteers at Friends of Shelter Pets who post these dogs, have never met these animals and don't have any further information on them.
If you are not ready to commit to one of their shelter dogs but would like to foster an animal, please contact several local rescue organizations, and see if any of them will agree to rescue the animal if you foster it. Right now, we are not able to do this for you, since we are a small rescue and unable to commit to the medical bills of any new fosters.
You can also help save lives by volunteering to help us post more animals on our website to help keep the public aware of the many wonderful pets that are in shelters and not already posted elsewhere on petfinder. If you can help volunteer from the comfort of your own home, we will teach you how. Please inquire.

Here is his link http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21174251
Hopefully someone has taken him or will soon
Hi Priscilla, Do you have the actual link? I've gone up and down the lists of like 200 dogs for both Adoptable and Lost and Found and can't find him. I hope that doesn't mean he's gone already.
