My two favorite critters: Gromit and my son Dave.

Writing the previous posts, which were more about the Corgis I had than the one I now have, brought to mind a quote I picked up somewhere. I have no idea who it may have been but some wise fellow once said "A new dog can never take the place of an old dog but in time will make a place for itself." So it is with my new Corgi pal Gromit. He's all Corgi but he's also his own kinda dog and I'm glad I'm smart enough to appreciate that.

What a sweet little guy... there's much love there! What would we do without our furry kids?

Alice's comment brings to mind my friend Keith. He and his dog Pepper, a mixed breed, were together for an amazing seventeen years. After Pepper was gone Keith swore he'd never get another dog. A year later he was still saying it. But three or four years on he began to have a change of heart. He found a pup, another mixed breed, and Keith and Sundae, who is now three or four, are fast friends and go everywhere together. Keith still misses Pepper but Sundae has made her own place in Keith's life.

That's a cute picture and I like the quote.

I think getting a new dog after losing one does help you heal. Everyone has their first doggy love and no other dog can compare, but they don't have to. They just need be a true friend and find their own place in your heart.

Some people don't think you should get a new dog until you are completely done grieving but from my experience, getting that new pup helps the process move along. Some people say they won't get another dog at all when theirs one day passes. My best friend and I were actually talking about that just a couple days ago and she said when her dog one day passes away she will never get another dog. She loves him and wants no other because they will never be as good. I know it is hard not to compare your lost doggy love to any new dog but I don't think writing off dogs is the answer; it's amazing how many people do though.
