I am one of those crazy people who have to research everything before doing anything when it comes to medicines and medical procedures. Freya is almost up for spaying--well my vet does it from 6 months and up. So, like a worrying mother--I started researching about spaying a dog just so I would feel better about my decision.

My boyfriend isn't supportive on this (his Weim is not neutered). He wants to know why I want to rush and get this done, which is the other reason I have been researching. He wants to at least wait a month or so but I don't want Freya to go into heat either. I'm not even sure when she would go into heat and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised that she would try to escape.

Through my research I was kind of surprised by what I found. I found a lot of cons associated with spays--I'm not going into them but some are common sense. It changed my views a bit...and now I find myself questioning when to actually go through with the spay.

At this moment, I have a schedule for the 30th. Freya will also get chipped which will give me so much relief that I may be able to rest a bit easier.

I have absolutely no intentions of breeding her. I don't want to deal with puppies mainly cause I know how attached I get and how little time I actually have to devote to this. I was kind of concerned as some of the research suggested that if the dog in question had aggression it will only get worse with a spay--not to say Freya is aggressive but she's definitely ornery and bull headed. I would also want her to be structurally sound in terms of bone growth too.

I'm also concerned that she would have a high chance of pyometra--mainly due to her lack of personal hygiene. Honestly, I can't even remember her ever cleaning her girlie bits.

Bah this is an absolute ramble of a post. I wish I never mentioned to him about the spay. At the same time, I did learn a lot and got furthered confused.

I'll probably do it right away. I've heard of "silent heat" and that would be my luck and I know it would drive Cloud crazy.

I read a study and I wish I kept it that said that it could lead to a higher chance of hip disorder because there isn't the sex hormone which helps with the hip formation. It also said they have a higher chance of getting bone cancer. But I will get her spayed. I'm just trying to figure out if I should do it right away or wait until her first heat.

I agree with you Lauren. I like to have as much information as possible before going into something (especially medical because I don't trust the doctors to be thorough in their work) but there are so many things that share the same symptoms (and could also be normal like your dog's short rapid breaths) that you will more likely scare yourself than find answers. Most if the things people associate with neuter/spay have been proven incorrect such as a fixed dog becoming fat. That is not so, you just need to feed your dog less as a fixed adult than you would if he/she was unaltered because their body requires less. Also, some people still believe the dog's personality will change but doctors say this isn't true and from what I have seen I would have to agree that this is false. Having an unaltered male and female living in the same house is a recipe for disaster so I would say having Freya spayed would be a wise decision.

I hate researching crap online because then it always makes me so paranoid... Like earlier today when I THOUGHT Winston ate an onion, then I researched it and "short rapid breaths" is a sign of onion poisoning, and despite the fact that Winston had just been chasing the cats around, I thought his short rapid breaths had to do with the onion (which he didn't eat)... But long story short, reading crap on the internet makes you real paranoid. Talk to your vet before the procedure so you can feel more comfortable :)

My german shepherd wasn't spayed as a puppy, and nearly died a couple of years later from a nasty infection that led to an emergency hysterectomy...I was just a kid so I don't know how much it cost, but it was a lot. Last month, the same thing happened to my coworker's corgi and I know how much he paid: 4k. The benefits outweigh the risks.

You're little girl will be fine. I know it's hard putting her in a situation like that. But its much better that you spay her now, then deal with the consequences later.( being pyometra, false/real pregnancy) Weim/corgi pups? that would be interesting. lol

I've always been told that spaying and neutering will greatly reduce cancer risks and for females it will also eliminate the chance of uterine infection. Finn goes in to be neutered tomorrow and of course I'm nervous but I think it's best for him and for us. What are the negative things you are reading that are making you question having her spayed?

bah, before I did a spay, I did research, and most people say it doesn't change the dogs mood at all and it's actually only anecdotal. Pooka has never had the food aggression, so I can't tell.

All the research I did said you needed to get them spayed before their first heat, because for every heat they have without getting pregnant, their chance for (basically) breast cancer goes up 12%.

Also, the vet charges more ;)

and I too think Pooka would've tried to escape if she went into heat.
