Still on the search for a reputable breeder

So I have been looking for a good reputable breeder this past year. I am looking for a corgi sometime at the end of this year or next year. I am willing to wait. Just wanted to get some feedback on what you guys think about these breeders asking for an upwards of $900+ for a corgi that has no champion lines or it's just one parent that does. Is this a reasonable price for a pembroke corgi? I also don't mind if the corgi doesn't have champion lines because I won't be showing he/she anyways. I do want the breeder to have tested their dogs for genetic diseases though. I contacted a breeder that had a DM carrier corgi parent but was still asking $900+. I also contacted a breeder on the AKC site and she said she did not do testing because she knows where her dogs came from. Just wanted your guys feedback, sorry for all the questions. It's just getting so hard to find a good breeder in the socal area. Thanks in advance.

You might want to look into Coventry Corgis, in Pomona, I believe (or Anaheim). Excellent and very well-respected breeder.

Samantha, I would stick go to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, S. CA chapter for a list of breeders in your area. I'm trying to send you a private message but so far I haven't been able to. Maybe in a few hours it will work. Try to send me a message. We are officially friends. ;)

I'd think a good breeder will be screening for the hip dysplasia and Von Willebrand's and so on, but the DM thing is complicated (read the many posts herein).  Do not rule-out a breeder or litter just because one parent is a DM carrier.  Eliminating all DM carriers from the breeding population is not a good strategy; that will create a genetic bottleneck and new problems and sacrifice important genetic material.

If one parent is carrier (AG) and the other is clear (GG), expect 50% pups to be carriers and 0% at-risk for DM.  If one parent is at-risk (AA) and the other is clear (GG), expect all pups to be carriers (AG) and )% at-risk for DM.  I think I've got that right anyway.

I WOULD expect a breeder to be screening parents for DM, but not necessarily publicizing the results.

Search here for the threads on how to spot a 'good breeder'.  You might look up Joanna Kimball's blog, I think she wrote about this somewhere.

One thing you get from a 'good' breeder is support down the road, which I just experienced when Al starting limping;  I called-up our nearby breeder and got a long earful of advice, and I'll talk to her again tonight.  She knows the vets and surgeons and asked for the radiologist's name.  That kind of help is invaluable, but worth $.

You may not care if your dog has "champion lines" (whatever that means), but if the breeder is actively showing, is involved in the local breed club, has experienced success in the show world, blah blah, blah blah, I'd think that demonstrates  dedication to what they're doing and some knowledge about it.  Also, expect them to make *you* jump through a lot of hoops to demonstrate that you're good enough for one of their dogs.   Ask to see a copy of the contract they'll make you sign.

So take your time and do your homework and find out who's who locally.  If you don't know who you want, you'll probably end up with somebody else.
